Last week Samsung Canada gave us a quick look at the upcoming Android 2.2 tablet they’ll be releasing. The Galaxy Tab is a powerful little beast that has a 7-inch TFT LCD display (with 1024 x 600 resolution) and also has Samsung’s TouchWiz 3.0 UI.
The good thing about the Tab is that it’s a device that can actually easily fit in your pocket (not your pant pocket, but a suit pocket) and you can use it with one hand. Seriously, it was actually pretty comfortable and can do basically anything you want to do such as e-mail, videos and video calling, surf the web (supports Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and has WiFi). The Tab has a 1.3 megapixel front-facing and camera and a rear 3 megapixel camera with flash.
As for weight, a light 380 grams. Comparing it to the iPad it weighs 680 grams… and to the Galaxy Vibrant smartphone weighs in at 118 grams. The Tab has a 4,000mAh battery and the one that we played around with was still a pre-release model so the battery life was still in testing. So we can’t comment on if it drains or not. Rogers and Bell are the Canadian carriers that will be releasing this “in the coming months”, most likely in time for the holiday season. We’re not sure if this will be available outright or available on a price plan model.
I saw no lag time at all and it could be from the 1GHz Hummingbird processor that’s packed inside. Other key specs of the Tab are that it has16GB or 32GB internal storage and holds up to 32GB with a mircoSD card, Samsung’s Media Hub, Social Hub, plus the ability to read and purchase books, magazine, newspapers (“Readers Hub”), has a virtual QWERTY keyboard has Swype built-in, access to the Android Market, Google Maps, Google Talk etc…
Check out the quick video of the Tab in action:
It does look quite interesting. It’d be even more perfect for schools, though it would never and could never replace my iPad. Amazingly, I find my iPad to large to bring to high school! I know, crazy. This would be an awesome size, but I wouldn’t want to see the ridiculous plans Rogers will be charging. A device like this should cost around $10 a month. Honestly, if I already pay you $50 a month, I’m now paying another $35. No way.

Not a fan of Tablets altogether but nice to see Samsung take care of the Canadian market which has embraced and bought so many of their feature phones for such a long time.

Nice little unit. I seriously hope it comes in at a reasonable price point, not like the WAY overpriced iPad. It’ll be interesting to see how this game plays out, especially as Nokia and others bring out their devices.

So Rene, if the iPad is WAY over-priced, why aren’t we seeing a plethora of cheaper tablets hitting the market. Maybe because the thing is actually well priced? I’ll be very surprised if Samsung prices the Galaxy Tab anywhere near as cheap as the iPad.

The reason you don’t see many cheaper tablet devices yet is because most manufacturers of these products were behind and didn’t anticipate the success these types of devices would have. They are now playing catch-up and without the marketing behind them (yet, anyways) there probably waiting for the Holiday season;
It’s a very well known fact Apple over-prices their products, well, because they can. They’ve built their reputation so as to justify what they charge. Most people thought (and still think) the iPad is over-priced, especially when compared to Net-books. A successful introduction of a better priced, equally performing (maybe better?) device from the slew of competition coming this winter, will show that iPad sales will not remain as strong as they were/are currently. Android has already surpassed iOS (yes, it’s on multiple manufacturers, but still) and will continue to gain momentum.
Apple’s success will continue, because they have a following, however, don’t expect too much loyalty once people try and start liking other products out there. It’s inevitable that Apple’s market share will drop.

I could see this being a secondary line/phone/device for a lot of people. Myself, I have 2 phones. Work, and personal. I could see this replaceing my work phone, which is mainly for email anyways, with very little talking.
The ability to view full web pages on it at a decent size would be damned handy, as I do a lot of that on the go.
Plus the movie ability would be nice. My Nexus one is fine for light browseing, calls, txt, email. But it’s very poor as an ebook reader/movie device while on the go.
I’ll wait and see. Though I expect the price to be $700+ at least for this.

im shure they will apply there ridiculous min voice and data pricing sceem and Over price it so it wont be easly purchased by tha average working person (not supported by mommy and daddy or in a well paying job) with Out locking into a long term contract….
i’ll gladly take a second line for this if on a desent plan..
i am a power user, so will no dought just use my sim with unlimited bell data wen using this.. but aint willing to pay over $20 monthly.. i dont use over 50 total voice min a month on my main device so im not gunna be happy if voice is forced with this….

Great preview.!
I didn’t really like the idea of a tab/pad. The iPad is just too big to be really useful but this seems like a pretty decent mix of form vs function, especially for someone who cares less about voice type data and more about a mobile internet device.
I’m curious how the Canadian providers will sell connection subscriptions for the device since by all accounts the device isn’t suited for voice so will they sell it as a data only device? Wonder if they’ll sell plans for this similar to internet-stick plans.. Or they’ll cobble together something specific.
Very cool either way, I want to play with one.

prOcs, I also like the idea of a tablet, and especially an Android-powered one, being a Nexus One owner. But there aren’t any on the market, so I bought an iPad back in June. I don’t find it to be too big at all. It is exactly the right size. You say you want a mobile internet device. Try typing on the tiny Galaxy Tab keyboard. YOu’ll be thumbing at best. The keyboard on the iPad in landscape format, however, is just the right size for touch typing.
Yes, the Tab will be more portable, and even pocketable, and you can’t say that about the iPad. But the latter goes with me wherever I go, and it’s been very useful. My concern at this point is that the Tab isn’t large enough!

Don’t listen to midtoad, I can Swype faster on my Galaxy S screen (in portrait orientation, even) than he can no matter how he does it on the iPad. The Galaxy Tab also comes loaded with the Swype keyboard, so no worries at all.

All Apples products are overrated and overpriced, lacking in functionality. Waiting for the 7″ Android tablet made in Asia for $50, coming to a carrier near you. Beat that suckers. ;-p

I think the size is good. At 10 inches, I would prefer a netbook with a real keyboard and a display that stand vertically when on a table.
However, I think that the montly fee will be a deal breaker. Anyways I have a smartphone.

I could see having this and a basic cell phone but having a smart phone? Can’t find a place for an iPad in my life either though so I’m in the target market.

Gents (mobilesyrup).. can you change your youtube embed code so that it’s *MOBILE* friendly? 80% of the content I read from this site is from my cell (galaxy s). I shouldn’t have to hit my PC for these vids.

I was hoping that Samsung would market the device directly as an unlocked device. Now that this thing is offered by Rogers and Bell, it will most likely be locked.

I got in touch with Samsung Canada, and yes like the US model there is no voice on the Tab…which is a really bad decision, depending on how it is sold. If you have to sign a contract to get it for a reasonable price, and pay and monthly fee for the data plan, along with paying for your phones plan that would deter me from getting a Tab. I was really hoping the Tab could serve as my next phone
Hopefully it will be sold, as the iPad is, contract-less at and outright price with reasonable pay-as-you data – and for it to be successful it has to be cheaper than the iPad since the screen is much smaller.
