TELUS going live with 3G+ network in New Denver, BC on September 7th

You might recall that New Denver, B.C. residents and the Valhalla Committee for Environmental Health (VCEH) passionately opposed a new cell tower from being constructed due to possible health risks. After years of debate, Industry Canada stepped in and ruled in July that the tower can be built. (Telus said the tower will have exposure level below 1,000 microwatts per square metre).

The day is near and TELUS sent out a press release stating that on September 7th service will go live for New Denver, Silverton, and the surrounding areas. The total investment was $500,000 and brings 3G+ wireless voice and high-speed Internet.

Steve Jenkins, TELUS General Manager for the Southern Interior said “Not only does this new service give New Denver residents and businesses the convenience of making calls on the move, it gives them access to critical 911 services anywhere they can get a signal and even great broadband Internet service where it may not be possible to build wired Internet access. This tower has been a long time coming, and we appreciate the patience of the community over the last three years.”

  3. I was lead to beleave that cell towers cost around one million installed,That is what Robbers told me.That was probably there reason for not putting up new towers.

  5. So let’s just get this right. The residents didn’t want a cell tower built, TELUS built one anyway. Sounds about right, we all know cell companies don’t listen. What I want to know is who do they think is gonna use it?

    • *SOME* residents did not want a cell site, however, emergency responders, the traveling public, and many other residents do. New Denver has a CBC Radio and CBC Radio 2 as well as CBC TV broadcast locally, in addition to the local KBS radio station and wireless internet service. With the possible exception of the wireless internet, all of these broadcast far more RF than does the cellular antenna. By the time you are any small distance from the cellular tower the strength of the 1 milliwatt signal has reduced greatly due to the inverse square law.

An individual is exposed to far more RF by carrying and using a cell phone than by that from the ‘tower’.

If you do a quick search on the web, you’ll find that even the Valhalla Wilderness Society, the ones who started it all, withdrew their objections, due to “the low power output of these towers.”

  6. There is quite a bit of evidence out there showing that microwaves can lead to cancer.

It took many years for people to finally believe that cigarettes cause cancer and the tobacco industry still says there is no scientific evidence linking tobacco to cancer.
It was not until the government forced them to publish those warning ads on the boxes that they finally complied.

At the end of the day industry Canada should not force residences to comply. Oh I forgot Canada is a free country, riggght!

    • The “evidence” is dubious at best. There is no direct evidence that cell phone signals lead to cancer, especially modern digital signals.

Most of this so called “evidence” relies on bizarre studies such as zapping genetically modified rats/mice/worms with insanely powerful signals far beyond any realm of actual possibility. This only proves that unrealistic exposure to unrealistic radio waves might cause cancer. It does not in any way relate back to actual cell phone signals.

If I suck on a tailpipe I would probably die pretty quickly. That doesn’t mean that a car driving by me on the street will have the same effect.

The link between cancer however was clear once people actually started to study it (especially people other than the tobacco companies). Comparing tobacco/cancer with cellphones/cancer just isn’t valid. One is cut and dry, the other is unproven despite extensive study for decades.

  7. @tbr Where is the evidence? A lot of research has been done on cell phone radiation and an association to cancer hasn’t been conclusive. Besides, if we think about it, microwaves are lower in energy on the electromagnetic spectrum than visible light… so does visible light cause cancer too?

  10. True hippies harness the technology of the times to socially organize. This will further enable sociopolitical organization and social networking. ‘nough said.
