Text the TTC for the next streetcar!

Another TTC story for you this morning… but this one has already available. If you plan on taking the TTC streetcar you can now receive text messages when the next streetcar will arrive at your stop.

There are over 600 stops that are outfitted with a unique stop number. All you have to do is send a text message with that number to 898882 (txtttc) and you’ll get a text back with up to the next 6 arrival times.

The TTC says “There is no cost to customers for this feature. However, standard text messaging rates apply and customers should check with their service provider about their own text messaging rates and plans. To protect against spam, there is a limit of 10 text messages every 12 hours, per cell phone number.”

This service will be coming to buses next year.

  1. be nice to see this in an app that can pull in the times based on the stops close to your gps location.

it is a start. gota try it out next time the TTC is running normally

  2. Montreal, the STM, already has this for buses. And commuter trains, AMT, sends out alerts by SMS when trains are delayed.

The more mobile browsers support HTML5 the more these public services will be able to use the geo-location API so the web sites will able to direct you to the nearest stops and show arrival times.

Building platform specific apps is a waste of time and effort when one web site can support all platforms.

  3. Go to http://www.nextbus.com/webkit it pulls your GPS location and displays the nearest TTC vehicles and arrival times, for any nearby route.

Make the page into a bookmark, and voila, you have your app.

Works for many transit systems too!
