“Chatr” is Rogers new wireless brand that is going to launch soon… we’ve been informed it’s actually within a couple weeks. Last week we quickly spoke with Rogers EVP John Boynton who stated the Chatr brand has is targeting “the very basic need customer with above average usage, average to below average income, sophisticated in the sense that they’ve been a wireless customer for a little while so they don’t need a lot of help with support.”
Thanks to one of reliable tipsters for sending us slides of a Toronto training session. Below is basically almost everything you need to know about the new entry level brand. They are directly competing against Wind Mobile, Mobilicity and Public Mobile and will have coverage “Zones” that are in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton and Ottawa… looking at the pics below it seems the zones actually stretch all the way to through to Quebec and Nova Scotia. Apparently there will also be some sort of “in-zone” benefits that follows you to other zones that aren’t your own.
Chatr is going hard on being part of the Rogers network and their reliability. One slide states that “You’ll have no worries – thanks to fewer dropped calls, better reception, and one low monthly fee for all the talk and text you can handle – so you’ll talk happy.” The Chatr Wireless tag line looks like it’s “No worries. Talk Happy”.
There will be No Activation Fee, billing by the minute and will support unlocked phones on their network. So you will simply purchase their SIM. Chatr will also operate a “Prepaid” credit card payment system called “Auto-Pay”. For those who do not own a credit card they will have “top up cards” available.
They will have 2 plans: Unlimited Talk and Unlimited Talk & Text. There is no price listed for either but it’s pretty basic. All plans will have Unlimited incoming and include Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Group Calling and Unlimited Incoming Texts. UPDATE: We were sent an e-mail the Unlimited Talk is $35 per month and the Unlimited Talk & Text is $45 per month.
For the Unlimited Talk plan it looks like Outgoing calls are Unlimited in your province but will cost you $0.15 per minute when you leave your Zone. Roaming will cost you $0.25 per minute. In addition, every text message sent past the 50 mark (in Canada and the US) is $0.10 per text. Oh yes… it’ll cost you $0.25 to retrieve your voicemail. For the Unlimited Talk & Text it’s close to the same as above but it’s all Unlimited and free to check your voicemail.
We’ve been informed that the rate plans and phone prices are tentative but will be highly competitive. When it comes to devices they’ll offer “Quality phones at a super low price”. The slide below shows the Nokia 1661 called “The essential” for $49.99; the Nokia 2680 as “The Slider” for $89.99; the LG GB125R as “The flip” for $69.99 and the Samsung Gravity as “The QWERTY” for $149.99. They will not have a Smartphone.
Check it out below… more info soon:

No offerings for cheap data though, right?

No data hurts them and the roaming charges sucks. I am guessing its $35 for unlimited talk and $45 unlimited talk and text. So your looking to compete with Wind/Mobilicity.

What a coincidence that there is no Montreal “zone” since there is no competition in this area yet. This move really shows again what competition can do to lower prices.

Looks like they’ve pretty much copied Wind for the most part, even down to the 25¢ min US roaming etc.
Laughable though from the fourth slide they state that Chatr, but not Wind has “Quality phones at super low prices”.
Chatr: Samsung Gravity $150
Wind: Samsung Gravity 2 $130
I really hope people don’t fall for this from Rogers. Stay with your big 3 carrier if you want, but please don’t reward this from Rogers. It’s only cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Make no mistake, Chatr will disappear as soon as Wind/Mobilicity does if they succeed in forcing them out of business. Then we’re just back to the same old, same old.

Rogers will do well, but it will come at a cost. There won’t be many upset Rogers customers as some suggests on this site because of what they are offering through Chatr.
This will put pressure on their average revenue from customers on a monthly basis.
But then again, Wind, Public and the others will be gone.

If I am going to sign up for something that has zones, I will do Wind or Mobilicity! Why would I sign up for a company that CAN offer me unlimited everywhere, but wont!? F*ck them!!! Also, they don’t have data or the iPhone! I need NEED both of those, or at very least the data. So this is a fail. EPIC fail! =)

This is so half-assed, why give rate plans that are comperable to the new competition and maybe steal some of their business, when they could easily offer unlimited talk and text anywhere in Canada for the same price and definately put the competition out of business? If this plan doesn’t work, they’ll have to continue offering these plans indefinately at lower profit margins. If they go all out, the new entrants will be gone in a couple years and then they can go back to gouging forever.

$35 for unlimited talk and $45 for unlimited talk and text, these are the same price plans as Wind mobile. What kind of competition is rogers bringing if the prices are the same as Wind mobile. I swear there is no point for Rogers to bring in this new chatr service I mean look at the prices, its the same as Wind mobile. I have an idea for Rogers why doesn’t the new chatr service provide a new type of marketing strategy? What kind of marketing strategy, it should be Free incoming calls not unlimited just free incoming calls for prepaid customers. Also instead of topping up each month, extend the validity and recieve free incoming calls, without having to top up each month and even if a customer has a balance of zero credit, the customer is still eligable to recieve free incoming calls. This is the best, this strategy is used in Europe and in the Asian countries. Try it out Rogers and bring some real competition, instead of the same price plan that Wind mobile is offering currently. If rogers is bringing the same price plans then I guess there is no competition. Give the new marketing strategy a thought. Look at Vodafone, o2, Airtel, T-mobile. Apprently Canadian wireless is too behind when compared with Europian continents and when compared with India, China, Singapore and so on.

It is great that, companies like Vodafone, o2, Airtel, T-mobile and companies in India are able to offer such great prices and unlimited incoming calls, but you also have to consider other facts. Facts such as Canadian population, with population just over 33 million and out of those only 75 % owns a cell phone, compare to other countries such as India and singapore and UK, where consumers have more than one line. So in that circumstances Companies are able to make little profit per line with lot of people. Which is not possible in Canada yet, because 25% population don’t even have a cell phone, therefore high prices with low demand? make sense right.
Look at India, There are over 85 million cellphone subscriber, compare to 22 million Canadian Subscribers, Just number of cellphone subscribers in india out number Canadian population.
So basically, it is yet not possible for Canadian Wireless Companies to offer same flexibility with plans and prices like companies in other countries. Lets face it, Wireless Companies are in business to make money.

just to make a few things clear for you guys. Chatr is going to run wind in to the ground. and Rogers is not worried about Data that is what fido is for. Fido will be recieving android devices and more broadband product and be at almost the same level as Bell and Telus. as for Rogers, With big talks to bring out devices to run Android 3.0 and with the main focus of Mobile broadband and to be the top in that Arena is ultimately goal number one. with the industry of Mobile Broadband doubling each year Rogers has the Edge to be the ultimate power house. Every one can Hate them as much as you want but Accept the facts Rogers owns this industry.
With chatr launching soon thier main focus is far from voice activations but to bring out the latest devices that only a proven GSM network can handle not one that is going through the growing pains.
have you ever tried to put you wind 9700 or your bell or telus smart phones in to 2g or edge when you battery is dieing or noticed when you drive into the mountains you phone says “searching for network”
lol go wind go?

WIND will stand strong.

The only reason to use chat-r is usage of good phones like iPhone, if chat-r would provide good data prices later on than it would def. kill the small 3.
i would love to use upcoming iPhone, bought unlocked at apple store and use it not on Rogers but on Chat-r with data.
Its either small 3 have to give better selection of phones, and just better coverage and fewer dropped calls or they are going down.
I always was cheering for wind, but if I have an option of using the iPhone, i would.
Just have to wait for data plans…

victor I think you need to check your facts.. Orascom, the Owners of wind are in deep trouble do a simple google search ” orascom in trouble ” and there you have the numbers. ” 4th quarter losses, over 500 million in fines..
also rogers has a far better network, will allow unlocked handsets not the 20 or so handsets that can be used on wind.. it will cut deep into the 20-30k subscribers wind has.
it has also been hinted that rogers will bring data and perhaps a Canada wide footprint.. the network is already paid for..
the network is far more stable… and the network can easily handle the unlocked wind phones … let the games begin.

My 2 cents.
People who are praising wind (you MUST be working for their marketing department). Currently I am a wind subscriber, I have had nothing but problems with wind. I have been waiting over 1 week for their tech support to contact me, I was told a supervisor would call me in the same business day, however, that was on Monday, and still nothing. Text messages are taking over 1 day or more to get to me or get to my friends, call quality SUCKS and most of the time, my incoming calls to voice-mail. I also tried their email support since I was too tired of waiting on hold for 2 hours at a time to get to their support. Oh I live in Downtown Toronto where Wind allegedly has full coverage.
After all that rambling, I just want to say, if Rogers is offering what Wind is offering, I am going back to Rogers, primarily because I know my calls and texts will go through, since they have a proven network in place. Main concern with “Robellus” was they are overcharging for their services, and Wind and others have opened their eyes. I am sure that Bell and Telus will come out with something as well. This is the competition we have been looking for, even if the competition is price matching.
My main concern is service. With wind I feel as if I am a guinea pig for them to test their network while I pay them for a service that only works some of the time (and to those wind customers who are thinking, why does he just not use the network builder… I have).

Michael you make a good point.. but it is not when but IF they will set up the network. Today orascom said they will have to ” trim the fat ” if they plan to keep going. Wind.CA is the fat they speak of. less then 30-40k subscribers and no real network.. its not going well.. look at what happens each and every month.. who was the rocket surgeon who thought all bills should be due at the same time? Even Wind in Greece and Italy do not acknowledge Wind.CA. Globalive is in debt to the tune of 1 billion dollars to Orascom.. I see problems..

@Michael: I’m not so sure if that will be the case. I think they can support unlimited because of the lack of coverage. Things could change once they expand and can no longer afford to be so generous.
And while I’m posting I just want to reiterate what a ripoff it is for Chatr to roam on it’s own network. Possible one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard.

Taylor what I find amusing about all this is the fact chat-r has not launched yet, and people are already pointing out things that do not work. These were guidelines. Might I point out in the beginning Wind stated that unlocked phones would not be allowed on the network.. then they had pitiful offerings so they backtracked that statement. I think many are missing the big picture. Chat-r can launch.. then slowly change things.. They can easily match wind for every step. The Customer service was good at 1 point with wind now its terrible. Winds network is failing daily, the second hand equipment is not holding up and the end is near as it looks.
Picture is you will.. Rogers chat-r Canada wide calling, all the options that wind has BUT you are able to make calls anytime anywhere.. R.I.P. Wind. Its a race and Wind is still stalling at the start line..

Hey Guys, I just got back from an official “chat-r” training session for the company that I work for. Chat-r appears to be a good solution for a lot of my customers, it’s exactly what they’ve been asking for. Since there are so many new entrants into the wireless business, we now have a lot of choices. Any company will offer “no contract” month-to-month terms or pre-paid service. Local number portability is FREE so move around until you’re happy!

All we keep hearing is rumors that Wind has 100,000 and even if it’s not true Gigolo Boy who runs the company will lie, however if that’s true that level isn’t hard to reach when you cut prices in half…considering how many quit Wind let’s see how many remain after the promotion as most who have joined are already complaining about the poor service/network/CS.
Rogers is actually smart and it’s a move I didn’t expect so soon, not because they forced to but because they realize changes have to be made since times are different and this will persuade most of the their users to remain with them once contracts end instead of trying bubble-gum providers like Wind with backers that have a record of being corrupt.Mobilicity however will have an opportunity to create a niche for themselves since they have a smaller area to deal with or be in a solid position to sell to one of the Big Three down the road.I don’t see PM doing much and they’re at the bottom of the pile.
Once Bell/Telus react Wind will be in no position to compete and Fanboys will be holding their testicles wondering what happen,if handled properly along with good rates ChatR can’t really fail as they have an established base with working network that provides good service and they are also able to go through the bad times unlike the new entrants…anymore mistakes by Wind/Mobilicity/PM and they are finished with no chance of recovery.
Looking at Wind’s/Orascom’s record in the manner they got into the market they deserve to fail the most and I hope they do.Their attitude/approach/deception was pathetic and some have balls to complain about our Canadian providers.
Thanks for the laugh!!!

Rogers and Bell build their networks ripping off customers pockets. the new wireless companies have to start from scratch, so all of you that think that this is good for the competition thing again… “chart” is a low move from “Companies” that are in one market monopolized until wind / public/ mobilicity / showed up. wake up people you my thing that “chart” is a good solution but in the long run it mite ruin the wireless market again…
we the costumers can decide what type of market we want…
and for those that are bragging rogers/bell networks … be fair and don’t make silly comparisons with 10 years network with ones that just started.

bottom line is.. rogers should just lower their prices enough to satisfy existing customers and at the same time, be able to draw in the new wave of customers. why have more new companies out there to confuse the public some more when you can focus on your main brand to make it better and more affordable?

It looks that concensus is that Wind and Mobilicity should be out of business.Rogers, Telus (RBT Inc) and Bell should be allowed to screw the customers again. To make up the loses due to Wind and Mobility, there assets should be handed over to RBT Inc.
And to show that its fair according to law, all we need is an Article in Main media stating that “Competation is Back between Bulls, No one interfere now please.”

I’m pretty surprised only like 1 person has mentioned Koodo, they’re so cheap I just think they need to emphasize that more in their ads instead of having a weird mexican wrestler running around in them.
I’m with Rogers waiting for the day my contract ends because when I started with them there weren’t very many choices.. I just wish all these cheaper wireless services had nicer phones. I don’t need to use the internet (who doesn’t have a laptop) but I just want a nice phone with unlimited text and a bit of calling really.
Does anyone even know if Chatr has the monthly ‘activation fee’ of 6.95?

I was using Chatr for couple of months on a pre paid basis. They have a policy of renewing the monthly charges on the 28th of the month even if your renewal date is later 28th of the month. This is never explained to customer. Customers are expected to read.I would expect the sales person to inform you about this, rather than leave it to customer. If the customer misses it Chatr has an opportunity of making money. Its a question of ethics
But the practices is what is questionable. Chatr give couple of numbers to call to cancel the connection. These numbers are busy most of the time or they are closed. I made repeated attempts to call and cancel my connection, as there was no one I could speak with, they ended by charging my card. When I did manage to get hold of them the next day, they refused to refund my money. Chatr is earning my misleading customers, and charging for service customers do not use.
Chatr conduct of business is unethical and practices even more deploreable. I will do all I can to discourage people from using Chatr.
