We know the new iPhone 4 is hitting Canada “by the end of July” but we received an from a tipster who signed up for Rogers updates that basically asks customers not to call them regarding launch dates.
The e-mail states “Dear Customer… We’re anxiously awaiting for the launch of the iPhone 4 in Canada on the Rogers network, however, at this time we don’t have anything to announce on availability and pricing…. We’ll continue to share details as soon as we can by e-mail. In the meantime, we recommend that customers do not call our Customer Care representatives as they have no additional details.”

Kinda don’t blame them for saying don’t call us as they must be getting inundated with calls. Last month it was revealed that “an average service call costs a wireless company $5 to $12″. So imagine how much money they’re spending on the iPhone 4 launch date calls. On the other hand, perhaps when a wireless carrier puts “coming soon” on upcoming devices it would reduce the amount of calls.
You can check it out here
I dont blame them one bit they should put a prompt during the wait music saying if the reason of your call is for the iphone 4 please hang up so people with more important issues can be helped.

Its a rational thing to say, but its still a stupid thing to say. If you know customers are going to call you then come up with a reason to make it a positive thing.
Pre-qualify the customer, record their info for callbacks, etc. Do something to make it worthwhile. Don’t tell a customer NOT to call you unless you don’t want them as a customer at all.

I find the rather comical. I too have been phoning around trying to get some exact dates, but haven’t had any luck. Wish we could find out soon so I book work off. Haha

The people calling about iphone 4 release and pricing are the reason why customers with real, current issues have to wait so much longer to speak with someone.
I agree with Rogers and find it completely annoying that people are this impatient today. Everyone want’s everything yesterday and a release date for the new item around the corner. You don’t think Rogers will spend thousands of dollars to advertise the iphone 4 when they have solid dates they can release?
Relax people, it’s coming whether it’s July 26 or 29th will not destroy all dreams of purchasing one.

Some people are just impatient. Do you think if Robelus had a date for the iPhone 4 they’d be keeping it a secret?
Harry I agree with you, put a prompt right when you call Rogers so people will hang up then.

I’m quite sure like how the US consumers knew well in advance about the launch date, so will we. Calling the support hotline for anything other than genuinely needing support can quite justifiably qualify as an abuse of the hotline.
Wait, chillax, I’m sure Apple and Rogers are more than willing to take your hard earned money for the newest “magical” device they schemed… I mean… worked ever so hard to bring to you.

If you visit Rogers website (as a visitor or as an existing customer) the first thing you get to see is a picture showing a huge iPhone, with the words ‘iPhone 4 coming soon’
Whatever do they expect? If they did not play the iPhone up as much they would not receive as many calls.

It’s really true, we don’t have any additional info. Pricing, I guess everyone can take a guess, $199 for 16Gb and $299 for 32Gb, it has been like this for the past 2 launches.

FWIW, Fido sent out an identical email (except Fido branded) to those on their “keep me up to date” list.
I agree with TNSF that it seemed to lean towards a “Screw off and stop bugging us” tone. They could have turned it into a pre-sale opportunity or something at the very least.
That said, I’m going to venture to guess that Rogers isn’t high on Apples buddy-buddy list given the debacle that was the original Canadian launch. I wouldn’t be one bit surprised that Apple hasn’t even relayed pricing to them yet so that they could figure out what they’re going to gouge (*ahem*, rather, SELL) them to us for.

@jamie
somehow i dont think thats why you wait long times, pre iphone 4 or whatever, what would be their excuse then? this happens with any call centre its just a matter of luck, sometimes when i call my bank for an important matter (like my account is frozen due to suspected fraud) sometimes i get a agent right away, sometimes i wait. however it is telling that people are this self centred over a cell phone, kinda makes you shake your head at societys mindset. its a iphone for f sake,

HA HA…cry me a river Rogers! Even though I’m not a customer of theirs, makes me want to call them everyday just to get back the $5-12.00 back from ripping me off years back.
I know, its petty…but come on its Robbers Wireless! Call them up people.

I think it’s stupid people would call in the first place. How difficult is it to go to Rogers.com? When they know the date, they will put it up there right away.
Here, let me waste my time, someone else’s time AND make the wait longer for those with legitimate issues instead of typing nine letters with one piece of punctuation.
Who the hell wants an iPhone 4 now? With the antenna issues it’s been having and Apple’s complete lack of giving a s**t to it’s customers you’re just buying in to a sub par device made by a company that will alienate you.

I am somewhat glad we didn’t get the first shipment due to the problems with the screen and antenna that others have.
Hopefully the shipments we get get will be way better.
And I’m still hoping for some news this week or next week about a release date!

@e823. $199 & $299 aren’t the pricing, those are the fees you pay for a 3 year prison term. Add about $500 to those figures to get the “pricing”.
What an opportunity for one of the big 3 to snatch the lion’s share of iPhone 4 customers if they offered it on 2 year terms instead of the insane 3. I know, I’m dreaming.

@ joseph niagara “You nailed it. Puhlese let’s give Rogers a break … what a load of crap people. If Robbers’ gonna advertise it, then tough for them and let them handle it.”
What we should be calling them on is the rumour of their upcoming budget service, Chatr, that they’re rumoured to only launching where WIND is currently located.
Bunch of punks, using the strenght of their monopoly to only target WIND’s operating markets. If Robbers wants to launch a budget network, then let’s see them do it nationwide.
Drive WIND and others out of business, then up the prices on those who joined Chatr.
So much for Canadian competition in the cellular marketplace.
AND why haven’t we heard about Chatr on Mobile Syrup? Are you guys a bunch of softies and shying from a bit of controversial news?

@Randy-1, You will be able to get it from Apple store, 16Gb $699 & 32Gb $799. Pay that price if you think paying for your service is a fee for prison.

Craig, it was posted on June 25th. Try reading with your eyes open. And here we go, another floppy vagina crying about a 3 year prison term. I’m going to say this like I do in every thread you guys do this. If you don’t want to sign a term agreement, THAN BUY THE FUCKING PHONE!!!! Stop creating sewage in these threads and wasting our time. They’re only launching in WIND locations? They’re trying to drive them out of business? Oh nooooo, did that hurt your WIND feelings? Did that make you break some wind? Boo f*****g hoo. If you were a CEO of a wireless company, which you won’t be because of your ‘feelings’, you would do the same thing. It’s a business, not a charity. It’s called competition, not ‘lets be little girlies and hold hands and not do anything that goes against one another’. What business world do you live in, Lollypop Lane?
Dumbass.

@Tim, I feel so sorry for you. You’re such an angry person. Time after time you spew “sewage” (if I may borrow one of your terms). Your “grammar” and spelling show the level at which you operate. You’re the first person on Mobile Syrup I’ve seen (and I’ve been around a lot longer than you) who has had a post removed. Now go find your other 12 year old colleagues, the grown-ups want to have a sensible discussion.
Mobile Syrup, why is this guy’s IP address not banned? I’ve yet to see a post from him where he isn’t using offensive and vulgar language, and most often it’s directly aimed towards other posters. Many people drop in an occasional four letter word, and I have no problem with that. This guy contributes nothing to the conversation, but merely seems to exist to attack others’ point of view.
Again I ask, what is the point in moderating discussions if you’re going to blanketly approve garbage like this?

@e823, I’d have far less of a problem with Canada being the only country in the world with 3 year terms, if the 1 & 2 year terms were reasonable. For the iPhone, those aren’t even an option.
The normal MO for Canadian carriers is 10% off for 1 year, 20% off for 2 years, and 90% off for 3 years! Thanks the genius Tim, I understand I can just not buy the phone, actually, I choose to buy it outright, but at the very least, the carriers should give the illusion they aren’t trying to lock customers in for as long as possible by being slight more just in their 1 & 2 year offerings.

LOL at Tim
I did get a kick out of your reply, but your humour would be more welcome if you just toned down on the vulgarity. No need for it really.
Sorry for missing the original post, it’s just that this is something that I thought would be up for a bit longer on MobileSyrups’ main page.
Back to competition and our cell phone industry. Of course, in a real free market, I wouldn’t be complaining about what Rogers is doing. Cutthroat … yes. Effective … even better.
But the problem is that the industry has been hampered by the CRTC and whatever other supposedly independent watchdogs from developing in a true free capitalistic environment. Just as Robbers and Bellus have benefited along the way from competition protection, then the same should go for WIND. Robellus have reached their dominant position in part due to the protective nature of our so-called free economy.

Okay, I admit, the vulgarity was a little too far after reading it a second time and I do apologize for it. I, however, stand by my point that this whining about 3-year contracts in EVERY thread is getting so ridiculous. It has nothing to do with the topic at hand. If you’d like to complain, than complain about the CRTC not your contract. Yes, I completely agree that the 1 and 2 year prices should be a lot better than they are but that is a separate discussion on it’s own. The topic was about clogging up the customer service lines yet the babble about your 3 year jail term gets tossed into the mix yet again. I will apologize to Craig (and the moderators) because the profanity was a little too far (and to whomever else was offended by that), but enough is enough. I only really post when people are swaying the content of the thread into the discussion of contract lengths which I probably shouldn’t. I often go through all of these topics and I’m not the biggest person on posting (which makes me curious on how long you assume I’ve been coming here). When a thread is robbed of it’s content I feel compelled to comment. That may be my e-fault, I admit.
If you could be so polite, Randy, as to highlight my 12-year old spelling errors I would appreciate it. If the “grown-ups” want to have a discussion, than maybe the “grown-ups” can STICK to the discussion. I get angry over peoples’ posts because when I’d like to contribute something the thread is already saturated with BS (there, profanity toned down) complaints about how they don’t agree with their contract. There are forums for this type of stuff, it doesn’t need to be in every thread.
I will lastly agree with you on going too far. I neglected that maybe some people are a little more sensitive than others. I do, however, expect with you to agree with me on the fact that the spamming of MobileSyrup with crying about irrelevant issues to the posted topic has gone too far.
There are forums here for discussions. These are articles. I know that if I was personally writing these articles I would be deeply offended by how often people don’t even talk about what I wrote.
