8GB iPhone 3GS available for pre-order at $549, ships June 24th

It’s unfortunate to watch other countries pre-order the new iPhone 4 today. Us Canadians can expect it “in the coming weeks” sometime in July from basically every carrier (TELUS, Rogers, Bell, Fido, Virgin, SaskTel).

However if you like the design of a perfectly good iPhone 3Gs you’re in luck! An 8GB model has been created and it can be pre-ordered now for $549. It looks like it’s only available in Black but Apple says it’ll ship to your door June 24th. (You’ll notice right next to the 8GB 3Gs is the new iPhone just teasing you with “coming soon”).

Check it here over at Apple Canada

That’s the UK site, but hopefully Canada does the same. It looks like this 8GB 3GS will be unlocked ($549) if ordered direct from Apple, so hopefully they put the iPhone 4 available unlocked as well.

UPDATE: Looks like all iPhones (3GS and 4) from Apple will be unlocked!!!

Does iPhone work with any SIM card or carrier worldwide?
iPhone 3GS works with SIM cards and iPhone 4 works with micro-SIM cards from compatible carriers, including prepaid cards. Non-GSM carrier networks do not support iPhone. Availability of 3G data depends on carrier support for the radio frequencies used by iPhone.

Can I use my iPhone outside my home country?
Yes. iPhone is enabled to work on carrier networks using GSM around the world. Because the iPhone sold by the Apple Online Store is commitment-free, you can purchase a SIM or micro-SIM card and service from a local carrier at your destination. Or check with your home carrier regarding international roaming charges.

Your new iPhone. Direct from Apple and ready to use.

When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it commitment-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time. Questions? Call our iPhone experts at 1-800-MY-APPLE.
    Reduced pricing is also available.

iPhone may also be available at a reduced initial price with a contract directly from your wireless carrier.

On my browser it looks looks like the Canadian webstore BUT what is that language that implies the 8Gb phone is unlocked and will stay that way? “…the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time”.

If that were true it would be an amazing breakthrough. Could Apple be treating its entry level model like Google’s N1, or is it a mis-print/mis-copy from a foreign site?

Do I need to commit to a long-term contract for my iPhone?
Buying a commitment-free iPhone from the Apple Online Store allows you choose your own carrier and change carriers at any time. iPhone may also be available at a reduced initial price with a contract directly from your wireless carrier.

If you buy your handset direct, you’ll still be paying subsidization fees to your carrier. So your $550 phone will really be $950.

I’m not repeating this for the fun of it…

    @donald

Read all the details. Apple states – on the CANADIAN iPhone page – that the 8GB 3GS AND ALL iPhone 4 models are unlocked and CONTRACT FREE if purchased from Apple. They say go ahead and switch carriers at any time!

FINALLY. WHAT A BREAKTHROUGH. THANKS APPLE!!!

Apple selling iPhone unlocked??? I think it might cost something ridiculous like $800+ easily. If it’s no more than $6300 after taxes, just might get it.

I just checked Sasktel,Nothing on there website about the iPhone.

You likely need a contract anyway. Not because of a subsidy but because that how RoBeLus rolls. They can’t figure how to keep customers if they don’t lock them in.

As well the 8 gig Iphone was not the 3GS model this is a new model the last model was only 8 gig 3G at the rate of the 99.99 with a three year contract

    >>I just checked Sasktel,Nothing on there website about the iPhone.

The new Sasktel network is supposedly launching in 2 weeks, and yet there’s no official update, or even any mention of what phones to expect.

EDIT: I meant to say C$780 for the 32Gb iphone 4 in my previous post above.

Thanks for taking this screen shot when you did.

Boy Genius Report is telling everyone that it read “Coming in July” but obviously on June 15th it read “Coming Soon” as per your screen shot.
