iPhone OS 4.0 coming March 14th?
The anticipated new iPhone OS is rumoured to have multi-touch and easier navigation. According to Redmond Pie they state that “Apple will demo iPhone OS 4.0 on March 14th”. Anything is possible… but the 14th just happens to be a Sunday. Here’s a list of what you can expect the improvements to be:
- There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide.
- “A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.
- Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
- The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”
- The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

Does anyone else read this as “holy crap we have to catch up to Android”?
Poor Apple, riding off their success and milking a 2007 product for 3 years…
The average product redesign cycle for a car is 3-4 years, Apple is clearly following this model. As more and more people become aware of better alternatives to this device, they will undoubtedly have to change hardware to play catch up and possible set the bar again.
Unfortunately, they wont have the luxury of being first to market with a ground breaking product…welcome to the middle of the pack Apple

Highly doubtful. Just another rumor. Specially since, you did point out, the 14th is a Sunday.
Either way, 4.0 will demonstrate the first OS ‘split’ for Apple. Therefore, I’m interested. The biggest selling point of the iPhone for me is the stable hardware and OS updates for all. Interested in how they’ll splinter it all.
I have still yet to own an Apple product however (besides a 2nd Gen Nano…). I refuse to give them anything until Steve Job’s disables his reality distortion field.

To bongsniffer,
I fail to see the problem in what apple is doing. To this date more then half the customers who come into our store come in for the iPhone. If you are able to take a phone that has three year old hardware and still make it this viable and popular in the market then you are far ahead of the curve. Beyond that the shareholders are loving apple right now. it costs alot of money to design new hardware and even more money to produce it. I am far from a mac head but its easy to see they are playing the game right.

“put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers”
I doubt this very much. Windows Mobile has been way ahead in that dept for many years, with Bluetooth HID profiles and USB Host, among other things. You can plug keyboards or terabyte hard drives, etc., and have something pretty near like a “full-fledged computer”. Of course, you have to put up with Windows Mobile and it’s at the end of line now with 6.5.
Apple is very careful about cannibalizing its own products. If you want VGA out and be able to use a real keyboard you have to buy the iPad, etc.

I’m really interested in what Apple will do this time. They clearly have to do an overhaul of the iPhone OS to compete with Android and Windows Phone 7 Series now. The rumors in the article are probably just made up, but I think we will see new ways of multitasking and a new homescreen for sure.
Even though I’ve gone Android, I look forward to Apple’s moves!
