It’s been just over a year since TELUS decided to build their new HSPA network and today they have announced a launch date for November 5th, 2009.
TELUS will be the only carrier with 3 networks to their name, CDMA, MiKE (PTT) and HSPA. The new HSPA network ensures we’ll get faster speeds for all your webpages, emails, songs, and movies, TELUS says wireless data download speeds of up to 21 megabits per second:. In addition this new network leads to a “smoother transition to fourth generation (4G) wireless technology known as long term evolution (LTE).”
As for devices, TELUS has confirmed that they will launch HTC, Huawei, LG, Nokia, RIM, Samsung, and Sierra Wireless in time for the holidays”. To date we know that they will be launching the following devices: Apple iPhone, BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Storm 9550, HTC Hero, LG BL40, LG GB 255, Nokia E71.
Darren Entwistle, TELUS president and CEO said “This is a great development for TELUS and consumers in Canada. Our new wireless network enables advanced speeds and services for more than 30 million Canadians based on the most innovative wireless technology available today. More importantly, it offers Canadians more choice and timely access to almost all major mobile devices in the world across TELUS’ three leading wireless networks.”
Should we anticipate Bell launching on the same day?

It would be nice to know TELUS/Bell’s coverage areas. There’s many, many parts of Canada that still only has 1X connection, I doubt they’re going to get this HSPA upgrade, which means they can’t use the devices (or can they?) I want more information, everything seems so quiet from the carriers.

There will only be hspa in Toronto / Calgary / Vancouver at launch. The rest of the areas will be waiting for years. Like every roll out in history.

FYI, Telus will have a network capable of 21 megabits per second download but not one of the new devices they are planing to launch is capable of coming close to that. So whats the hype about? The Iphone on the same plan, at the same price, with the same 3 year commitment as Rogers? I don’t see this a competitive, do you?

I live in Whistler, and the local dealer confirms the new network is set up here as well but couldn’t really provide any answers as to how much further beyond Whistler or the lower mainland will be HSPA.
My guess is the drive between Vancouver and Banff, or on the island would be very touch and go with large dead zones with a non-CDMA Telus phone for at least the next year or so. And forget Saskatchewan/Manitoba.. even Telus’s own fine print says end of 2010 for those provinces.
