Federal government announces $500 million round of AI funding

instead of regulations, AI gets more money

The federal government has announced an additional round of funding for Artificial Intelligence (AI), including $500 million to be spent over five years to expand and enhance the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative.

The press release notes that the initiative is part of Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which is also known as “AI for all.” Announced in June 2026, the federal government says that the strategy “aims to build trust, strengthen Canadian AI capabilities and sovereignty, and ensure all Canadians can use AI responsibly to build and benefit from it.”

Interestingly, this round of funding brings the total amount spent on the initiative to $700 million.

It was also noted that the initiative will be delivered by Canada’s regional development agencies, and the support will focus primarily on “sectors where Canada has strong expertise and economic potential,” which includes health and life sciences, energy and natural resources, transportation, agriculture, manufacturing and robotics, alongside other regional strengths and priorities.

Interestingly, the federal government added that the initiative is designed to help Canadian AI businesses gain customers, attract investment, and commercialize and scale Canadian-made products and services while supporting regional organizations that connect businesses with the support they need to adopt/commercialize AI tech — Ironic, considering that some LLMs ignore small Canadian businesses.

Honestly, I’m curious about how this round of investment will actually be used. While this investment is framed as making sure the country benefits from a global AI buildout, but this is a unique time for the AI industry. There are lots of concerns regarding the safety of AI and its usage by major companies (looking at you, DraftKings), alongside its environmental impact. Plus, there are still calls for AI regulations, which still haven’t been fully addressed.
