It looks like the PlayStation Portal might be getting a successor. According to documents seen by The Verge from the Wi-Fi Alliance, a nonprofit organization that can certify devices as capable of using Wi-Fi, new PlayStation hardware is on the way.
Two new devices have been classified as a “Gaming Console/Peripheral,” with the model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2015. The two devices are also certified for 1×1 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, but not 6GHz. These devices also reportedly run Android 15.
While this isn’t a lot of information to go off of, the current PlayStation Portal has a lot of similarities, such as the model number CFI-Y1001 and also runs Android 15.
If this is a successor, hopefully PlayStation changes how the Portal works. The current Portal is a device that streams from your home PlayStation or Sony’s cloud services, but you can’t play games natively. Hopefully, this hardware allows you to download PlayStation games on-device so you won’t need a Wi-Fi connection to play, similar to the Xbox ROG.
Previous rumours indicate that Sony is working on a Portal with an OLED screen, and another leak suggests that the handheld would sport a 120Hz refresh rate. However, this is just speculation at the moment.
