Eastlink announced the completion of a core mobile network upgrade using Nokia 5G Standalone technology. Additionally, the company says it will commit another $12 million to further network modernization and bring 5G to new locations across Atlantic Canada.
Eastlink says that the update will help the telecom meet the increasing demand for capacity and ensure long-term reliability of the network by strengthening network performance and scalability. It will also lay the foundation for future updates and support advanced services that the company thinks customers need.
Over the past year, Eastlink has invested $30 million in the expansion and modernization of its mobile services. This investment has gone into radio network modernization and tower installations in rural areas like East LaHave and New Germany in Nova Scotia, and Cornwall and New Glasgow in PEI.
Eastlink says these investments deliver faster and better connectivity, reduced dropped calls, and broadened coverage. The telecom’s network now includes more than 1,200 sites, standalone towers, rooftop and in-building sites, and small cell deployments, with 180 more sites in progress.
