Shomi, the Rogers and Shaw-owned video streaming service, is leaving beta testing and launching this summer. Thanks to a recent CRTC decision, all Canadians will be able to subscribe to the service, no matter what provider they get their Internet service from.
“The beta has been a huge success and we’re excited to now bring it to all Canadians,” said David Asch, the senior vice president and general manager of Shomi. “We’ve taken the time to work out the kinks so members can enjoy a great user interface and viewing experience.”
Shomi launched last November. The app allows customers to stream TV shows and movies to their tablet and smartphone (iOS, Android), as well as other devices like the Apple TV, Google’s Chromecast, and the Xbox 360. As for content, Shomi has shows and movies like Modern Family, Sons of Anarchy, Sleepy Hollow, Shameless and 2 Broke Girls, and some exclusives like Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle and Catastrophe.
Shomi is available for $8.99 per month, which makes it the same price as Netflix but more costly than Bell’s CraveTV. Similar to when Rogers and Shaw unveiled the service, new customers will receive their first month free.
There is no specific word on the go-live date, but retweeting this tweet will tell Rogers and Shaw to send you a notification when the service is ready to launch.
