Untethered iOS 5.0 jailbreak demonstrated on video, coming soon

A new break in the ever-long quest to jailbreak the new iOS version. A member of the dev-team, pod2g, has revealed that he has been able to create an untethered jailbreak for the 4th-gen iPod touch running iOS5.0, a pretty huge milestone on the road to bringing the hack to the masses.

Traditionally, newer devices such as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S have not been easily cracked, with Apple closing any hardware-level exploits open to executing alternate code. Now that we have proof that an untethered jailbreak is possible running iOS 5 on older hardware, hopefully it will spur on development for newer devices.

Keep in mind that the jailbreak is only for iOS 5.0, not the newest 5.0.1. If you haven’t already upgraded to the supposed battery-saving version and have any interest in jailbreaking, we’d recommend holding off.
