YES!!!!
Too bad for the FFC but I can live with that… now let’s hope it’s soon enough and that it won’t be crippled by bloatware like ATT did

@Simon; it is unconfirmed which incarnation of the Galaxy S this is; the Bell version is the International version with a front facing camera

@ Simon: Actually, in the U.S. this phone is the Captivate lol. It was launched on AT&T last week, and is the GSM version of the Galaxy S. This is why we are getting it. Hopefully Rogers does like Bell and adds that ever so desirable front facing camera! Android, Fring, and 6GB Data Plans on Rogers LOVE the front facing camera!!

@Simon
From the picture, this looks like ATT’s Galaxy S Captivate. Bell’s Galaxy S Vibrant is the T-Mobile Vibrant in the U.S. , or at least its outer design is, although they’ve got different radios.
With the Desire on Telus, the Vibrant on Bell and now the Captivate on Rogers we’ve finally got some solid options other than the iPhone for top-end smartphones. I just wish Wind could pick up one of these guys.

I haven’t seen it on any of the gadget blogs yet…does anyone know if you can turn off the Samsung overlay and revert back to Stock Android UI like you can do with some HTC phones and Sense?
Disappointed this doesn’t have a flash or mini-HDMI.

@ BEM: all you do is download a different launcher, such as ADW Launcher (my favourite), and choose to run that as your default home. BOOM. Back to vanilla baby.

I was just speaking with Rogers’ regarding a phone upgrade and let them know I was looking at getting the Captivate. The rep then told me he would let me know the release date because they got news on it today and the date is August 20. Closer than the previously stated September.

Hmmm… I think I like ‘the look’ of this one better than the Vibrant, but I am a Bell customer. The Vibrant looks a bit too much like an iPhone. I wonder if it has the front facing camera? All else being equal, I would consider switching providers when the time comes.

doesn’t have the front facing cam according to a comment on the red board:
http://redboard.rogers.com/2010/samsung-galaxy-s-captivate-coming-soon-to-rogers/#comments
still a pretty nice device.. if I was tied to Rogers already I’d consider it, though currently month to month and I’m holding out for the Pro version of this.. preferably on a carrier other than Rogers.

No Randy, Christmas is in the coming months since its months away, coming weeks means that its gonna be here in a month max or less. If this phone was months away they would have said in the coming months.

You can get HDMI output on the Galaxy S. They sell a micro usb to HDMI on the Samsung USA site for $40.

The Bell Galaxy S has the front facing camera, NO FLASH, but is the Euro model and looks too much like a iPhone 3G
The Captivate has NO front facing camera, no Flash, but looks unique and a lot nicer!

Joe: why not go ask on the Redboard posting? Rogers reps are pretty good at answering questions like that.
I’m *so* torn between this and the iPhone 4. I really prefer how Android handles multitasking, and notifications, but I’m more invested in the iPhone platform, since I already own a 3G and have spent a small amount of money on apps and games that I quite enjoy using. Oh, the dilemma of it all!

I don’t know guys, the Sumsung Epic 4G blows both of these away. And IMO, is better than the iphone 4G.
It has a slider keypad, flash camera, front facing camera, serves as a wireless hub hence wireless tethering, will likely be able to tether to the Samsung tablet, is 4G capable. The only issue is that it wont likely come to Canada any time soon.
Unfortunately it looks like the iphone has the captivate and vibrant beaten. The flash really makes a great deal of difference in low light conditions – and if you’re going to the trouble of capturing 5 megapixels, why no flash?
Ugh.. I didn’t want to go with the iphone…maybe by the time my contract is up (3 years)there will be a worthy Android phone in our market.

Well thats the whole deal, there is allways somthing better just around the corner. Im really torn between the Samsung Captivate and the Iphone, I believe that the Android platform is the future but I kinda wouldnt mind one go at an iphone im my life.
Im on a waiting list for the iphone so it might just come down to which is available first.

I actually don’t mind the captivate version. The front facing camera may be a downer, but the carbon fiber back looks ten times better than the original glossy plastic back.
I’d be fine with either one to be honest, as long as it gets the 2.2 OS update sometime, i’ll be happy.

Guys, the non flash is not that big of a deal. We took the sasmsung galaxy S into a dark room and honestly the night setting makes a big difference. There are even web pages out there comparing this night mode to cameras with flash and in an outdoors setting the samsung pics look better

I agree, lack of flash is not as big a deal as people make it out to be. The LED flash on the vast majority of camera phones is virtually useless, it’s just there for show really. If the night/low light mode is good, which it seems to be on this camera, then you won’t notice the lack of flash. Pictures that “need” a flash from point and shoot/camera phones tend to come out very unnatural looking anyway. As for the front facing camera, yeah it’s a neat gimmick, but that’s all it is. Video calling has been available commonly in Europe and Asia for years, and guess what? Nobody uses it, because it’s pointless other than as a “gee-whiz neato” gimmick that people will use for 5 minutes when they first get an iPhone/Vibrant and then promptly forget about because it’s far more trouble than it’s worth.

Stillll no sign of this phone. Come on Rogers, “in the coming weeks” should probably mean less than 4 weeks. What an obvious marketing attempt to keep people from jumping ship to Bell.
