Virgin Mobile releases LG 230 and Nokia 2730

Virgin has added a couple more basic devices to their lineup. One that will work on the old CDMA network and one what will work on the new HSPA network.

The LG 230 “Simple Flip Camera Phone” is a CDMA device and barely comes with a camera. It has a 1.77 inch display with a resolution of 128×160, 2.5 mm headset jack and is available for $59.99 on Prepaid or $0.00 on a 2-year contract.

The Nokia 2730 we reviewed a few months ago when Bell released this. It has a 2-inch QVGA display with a resolution of 320 x 240, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, FM stereo radio, Music Player and can hold up to 2 GB microSD card. This can be yours for $0.00 on a 2-year contract or $59.99 no contract.

  2. Virgin has been going down hill ever since they sold out to Bell. Plans are getting more expensive and services are getting worst.

    • What do you mean plans were cheaper?!? Plans are way cheaper now than before(eg 45 unlimited or 35 incoming plus) Before bell there were no hspa devices, 1 or 2 blackbery smartphones. Now they have the iphone and galaxy S. And in case you dont know, Bell always had 50% of virgin before full acquisition.

  4. Not that I’m particularly interested in the Nokia 2730 but why is it only available on a 30 day or 2 year contract from Virgin, while you can get it from Bell (yes, yes, they own Virgin) on prepaid OR contract?

Same goes for the Samsung Impact, which I’ve been thinking about getting. Virgin = contract only, while Bell = prepaid or contract. Both HSPA.

Might as well quit Virgin and go to Bell prepaid, as there seems to be more options at the mothership. I’d consider Telus but their prepaid phone lineup is extremely limited compared to Bell/Virgin. And that’s a pity.

  5. Virgins current prepaid system is not set up to handle HSPA devices. They’re not even currently finished migrating all the contract customers over to the new, better system, and I really doubt that they would initiate both moves at once.

And if I owned a cell phone company, I wouldn’t want prepaid phones to have 3G data speeds with a $10 unlimited web. People already use their CDMA phones as modems and with $10 unlimited web wrack up amazingly high data usage.

  7. I bought a LG230 on Sunday, February 20th and I’m returning it on Tuesday February 22nd. Why? Because I got a cheap fold out “Quick Reference Guide” to use the phone that has incomplete instructions and descriptions about the features and the use of the phone. There is no complete flow chart through the various menus and submenus on the phone. I still don’t know what some of the main screen icons mean. When you can’t provide comprehensive instructions about your product to make the user 1005 fully knowledgeable it means you’re just cheap which means your product is probably made cheaply also.

My Samsung 510 had a 120+ page booklet with it that was all inclusive. I learned my lesson.

Shame on you LG, shame on you for being c-h-e-a-p.

  8. To Danny, Toronto,Ontario
Hi Danny, I don’t know why your experience was bad but it is cool simple phone. For Icons, go to settings in menu then Icon glossary. There is meaning for all icons. This phone is so cute. Camera excellent, Audio specially recording quality outstanding I have made so many ring tones, alarms just by recording. Voice clarity is great. I love it.
