WIND officially launches brand in Calgary

For those of you who are screenwriters/movie producers you might want to give Tony Lacavera a call and do a documentary on the entire wireless saga. It’s honestly has enough high and low parts that would make for a great Sunday Night special, maybe even Tuesday.

Today is another day in the WIND Mobile chapter. They have officially launched in Calgary (4 corporate stores and 3 Blockbuster locations). Everything is the same… price points ($15/$35/$45 plan) and devices/products (BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Maple, Huawei U7519, Samsung Gravity 2, Huawei E181 data stick). For Calgary the coverage is limited now as you’ll notice on the map below. Here are some of the highlights… stay tuned as we are putting a full report together on price plan comparisons etc.

No activation fees, No contracts, No SAF, No 911 fees, No charge for incoming text or incoming long distance, No penalties for changing or cancelling a plan, Unlimited WIND to WIND calling across the country, Unlimited province-wide calling from a WIND Home Zone, Plans include caller ID, missed call alerts, call waiting, call hold, call forwarding, unlimited conference calling. Are you liking the plans or disappointed?

Tony Lacavera, Chairman of Globalive and WIND Mobile said “Today marks a new chapter for wireless in Canada. Thank you to the thousands of Canadians who have helped us to build WIND Mobile. We’ve listened to those conversations, and now we’re very proud to announce our offerings as a direct result of all the feedback. WIND is Canada’s company. Built by Canadians, for Canadians.”

  2. plans are good, but what good is the plan if you live outside the home zone, and work in the home zone….commuting back and forth to work, its inconvenient. Bill will add up really quickly.

  3. Just saw a work up for if you roam out of your home zone and onto the rogers network. Wind is charging $0.10Kb. Thats $100 in roaming charges if you use 1MB while roaming off their network.

$0.25 per minute for voice if roaming as well. Hope your not planing on leaving town with your phone.

This is incorrect – It’s $0.10/25kb or $0.004/kb. Pay attention or don’t comment.

“$0.25 per minute for voice if roaming as well. Hope your not planing on leaving town with your phone.”

I’d rather leave town with a WIND phone than Rogers/Telus/Bell who are going to charge me 0.30/min plus ‘local’ minutes for long distance…

  9. @williamns

Sorry my mistake on the roaming charge for data. But thats still $4200 per GB if roaming. Plus it only allows for roaming on EDGE not HSPA (I Realize that the use of 1GB on EDGE is very unlikely but the fact that you are getting charged to roam is the issue here and these are possible outcomes due to that).

And i’m sorry but If I get an unlimited voice plan I better not be paying for any voice minutes at all. No other carrier charges roaming rates for being outside of the city. For those in bedroom communities around calgary and toronto Wind is next to useless as you will be roaming the majority of the time.

Not to mention the fact that there if a very good chance you will be roaming even when your in the city due to spotty coverage from Wind towers.

Yes they are sure offering a real bargain.

  11. Sorry, but you get what you pay for. I hope all of you who jumped to WIND so fast are in for rude awakening! But, if you love it, then all the power to ya! Hope it brings my rates down a bit!

  12. Poor coverage from the looks of it, and plans that actually would cost me more for the same features, over what I currently pay on Bell. Good to have more competition in Canada, but I’d give these guys a year or two to be able to really compete.

  13. @ Kirk N

Last I checked most providers will charge for inter-city calling ie brampton to central toronto etc. (not sure the exact zones)

Who do you work for? All your comments are not facts and based on your extreme and incorrect “potential situations”.

  14. I’d have to agree with the majority of you guys. The pricing is nice, but there is only one recipe to keep them that way. I guess they are aimed at folks who don’t leave their city. The rest of us travelers will end up paying more in the end. Every other carrier has a canada wide LD option, and heck even a my5 can help getting around those costs. I’m down for saving money as much as the next guy, but it’s pretty sad that the CRTC had to bend the rules for these hustlers. All things considered, I think one is better off buying a GSM handset straight up, and activating monthly on another carrier. Stop crying about the contracts, and stop asking for companies to pay for your phones for you, and then we can talk about real freedom!
