TELUS released the BlackBerry Storm2 9550 yesterday and it’s puts the first generation of the Storm to shame. This is the device that RIM should have released first, but they took the feedback and make a device that’s more responsive and more productive.
You’ll see in the video that we checked out the difference between this model and the original, compared it to other touchscreens that are on the market and tested out how the improved SurePress technology performs. In addition, since one of the new features of the Storm2 was WiFi we took the touchscreen for a venture on the web and checked out the browsing experience and YouTube.
Overall, in our first review, the Storm2 looks very much like the original but some much needed improvements. Check out the video and let us know what questions you have and we’ll put another review together over the next few days.
The 9550 is available on the following plans:
3-year contract: $199.99
2-year contract: $499.99
1-year contract: $549.99
No Contract: $599.99

Now all we need is for Rogers to get the Storm 2, since Bell and Telus has all the bb line so should Rogers

Cody, yes the Storm2 does have multitouch capabilities. If you head over to crackberry.com or salomondrin.net you will find multiple videos dissecting all the wonderful features of this phone.
But now that it’s available in the flesh, head on out to a Telus Store, and get a hands on feel for it yourself.

It is my understanding that this device runs primarily on the CDMA network. With the presence of the SIM card slot, will it be capable of running on the new HSPA network? Otherwise, will they be releasing a version of this phone that will run on the HSPA network?

Joel, the 9550 is a CDMA phone. Yes it does have a slot for a SIM card, but it only for the purpose of world roaming. The original Storm also had this hardware feature.
While the phone IS compatible with European HSPA networks, it unfortunately, is not compatible with North American HSPA. I’m uncertain of the technical reasons, but discussions can be found on crackberry.com
There is a GSM version of the Storm2: model number 9520. This phone will not be coming to Telus. Reason being: Verizon has an exclusivity deal on the Storm2 with RIM to be the only North American HSPA network to carry an HSPA compatible version of the Storm2. Verizon does not have their HSPA network up and running yet, so Telus is bound by legalities to only have access to the 9550.
The good news is that Rogers will be getting the 9520 early on in the New Year. From what I understand, if you want to enjoy the speeds of HSPA network, as opposed to being stuck on CDMA, you can purchase a 9520 from Rogers, unlock it, and have it be compatible. If this is incorrect, please feel free to correct me mobilesyrup mods
I hope that helped Joel

How do u get this phone unlocked so that it works on GSM network. If i decide to buy this phone with no contract from telus, does that mean it would be unlocked and i can use it on any other carrier??
Any response will be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully, Rogers will bring the Storm 2 as well. Bell and Telus already got the iPhone – why can’t Rogers get the Storm 2 too?
