A developer has created an action-packed skateboarding video game demo that slowly devolves into Northern Ontario-themed chaos, including tricks jumping off a moving snowmobile, and culminating in a real-time long line-up to grab a coffee at Tim Hortons.
AI developer Mitchell Hynes has taken core Canadian experiences and infused them into the bones of a 16-year-old video game.
“What if skate 3 was set in north ontario,” Hynes asked his followers on X last week. He delivered on that promise with a full demonstration of his Northern Ontario version of the 2010 skateboarding video game, Skate 3, lasting almost a minute and a half.

To bring this familiar world to life, Hynes reverse-engineered the game and reformatted it to run on Bevy, a free and open-source engine built using the programming language Rust.
Hynes explained in a post online that the project required “more than two years reverse engineering Skate 3 and building the tools needed to understand and work with it. That meant countless hours digging through undocumented file formats, animation data, and game interaction systems, then testing those discoveries in the original game.”

Even with all the time invested, Hynes said he relied on AI coding tools “to develop this rewrite, but none of it would have been possible without dumbad’s extraordinary effort to reverse engineer the original game.”
For anyone looking to get creative themselves, Hynes shared a link to his GitHub, where he shares assets for his Skate 3 project.
If that sounds too technical, don’t worry. You don’t need advanced coding knowledge to bust out a sweet kickflip and then spend 47 minutes waiting for your coffee in an overcrowded Timmies.
However, Hynes stated that the game “is still a work in progress, and using original assets or showing working tricks does not mean every system behaves exactly like the original.”
