The iPhone Duo has reportedly run into some snags on its way to market.
According to China’s Jiemian News, Apple’s production yields on its first-ever foldable phone were only at about 60 per cent as of September 17. Citing a source close to Foxconn, one of Apple’s primary manufacturers, the outlet noted that it could take another six months to reach full supply based on Apple’s quality standards.
Per the source, Foxconn keeps having to make changes to its production and assembly process to make the iPhone Duo at scale. Interestingly, Jiemian News‘ source said suppliers are looking to see if Apple might ease quality standards to accelerate production.
Another issue, reports Jiemian News, is that there has been low yields of Samsung Display’s foldable OLED panels and hinge components. Naturally, this only holds up production even more. Altogether, Apple is reportedly targeting six to eight million units for the Duo’s global stock this year.
It should be noted that this isn’t the first time we’ve heard that there will be supply constraints for the Duo. Over the past several months, there have been multiple reports that Apple was having some challenges with the production of the Duo, particularly with respect to the hinge and display.
The Duo starts at $2,999 in Canada. Pre-orders open on Oct. 16 ahead of an Oct. 23 launch.
