PlayStation is using AI to improve visual fidelity on the base PS5 console.
In a blog post, the company detailed this work, which builds on the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) AI upscaling technology it already employs on PS5 Pro. According to PlayStation, this system analyzes game images pixel by pixel to “upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches,” and these “computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible.”
But now, PlayStation has teamed up with AMD to introduce a new form of AI scaling for base PS5s called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). Per PlayStation, this tech uses a “streamlined neural network architecture” and “hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5.”
While PlayStation notes that PSSR on PS5 Pro “remains the gold standard,” QSSR will still provide “some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability” on base PS5. The first two games to get QSSR support are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, with updates being rolled out today to add this as a new graphics option.
The company says QSSR will be offered to all PlayStation developers, so it remains to be seen who else will leverage the tech.
