Freedom Mobile offering some customers 5GB of free monthly data

The data race is well on its way with several Canadian carriers offering promos to encourage customers to sign-up or switch.

Shaw-owned Freedom Mobile is sending out text alerts to some of its customers that notifies them of a free data increase.

According to the text, Freedom notes, “You will now get an extra 5GB of fast Freedom LTE data each month, just for being a Freedom Mobile customer. Your bonus data will be applied to your account within 72 hours, and you will receive a text to confirm when it has been added. You will continue to receive this bonus data as long as you maintain or upgrade your existing plan. There are no changes to your monthly bill and no action is required. Enjoy Freedom!”

This is an increase of 5GB of “fast Freedom LTE data,” that Freedom Mobile does not throttle. According to the carrier’s Fair Usage policy, Freedom will throttle users who go over their monthly data allotment, slowing down their usage. However, Freedom doesn’t charge overage fees for customers who go over their data cap.

So depending on what plan you have this could be a generous amount of data for the price.

Rogers, Bell and Telus all recently launched $75 for 10GB of data ‘Infinite,’ and ‘Unlimiteddata plans. Similar to Freedom, these plans offer unlimited data that the carrier will also throttle after the customer reaches their monthly data allotment.

Shaw announced its Q3 2019 earnings in June and reported Freedom Mobile’s subscriber base increased to 1,578,355 wireless customers.

(Thanks to everyone who sent this in!)
