First-ever ‘Buy a Québec Video Game Day’ kicks off on Nov. 14

Quebec is holding its first-ever ‘Buy a Québec Video Game Day’ (Journée j’achète un jeu vidéo québécois) on Nov. 14.

As the name suggests, the inaugural event is designed to encourage people to check out one of the many games made in the province. After all, it’s one of the largest game development hubs in the world, a sector that contributes $1.4 billion to the provincial GDP and houses nearly 300 studios.

To help promote the initiative, La Guilde du jeu vidéo du Québec, the non-profit that supports the provincial gaming industry, now has an enhanced version of its Jeux vidéo du Québec (Games from Québec) portal. Quite handily, this resource lists over 400 games either entirely or partially developed in the province that are available for purchase. Filters are available as well to search by genre, studio, platform, age rating and more. From there, you can get info on each game, watch trailers and find direct links to available platforms.

For context, here are just some of the popular AAA and indie games made in Quebec:

• Dead Space (2023) — Montreal’s Motive

• Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy — Eidos Montreal
• The Messenger — Quebec City’s Sabotage Studio
• The Outlast series — Montreal’s Red Barrels
• South of Midnight — Montreal’s Compulsion Games
• Spiritfarer — Montreal’s Thunder Lotus

This is to say nothing of the many companies that have support studios in Quebec, including Bethesda (Starfield), and Gearbox (Borderlands) in Montreal and Beenox (various Call of Duty games) and Larian (Baldur’s Gate 3) in Quebec City.

With the Canadian gaming industry especially in mourning over legendary Alberta developer BioWare, it’s more important than ever to support Canadian game makers, especially indies, so they can keep making great art.
