Public Mobile launches the ZTE E520 for $70

Uber discount and entry level carrier Public Mobile has released a new device. The ZTE E520 is another basic talk and text handset, but this is the first that can do Instant Messaging. This also has the capability of being hooked onto their email add-on and is now available for the low no-contract price of $70. Hopefully the rumour of Public expanding their lineup comes true – seeing an Android device in their lineup would be a welcomed surprise.

  5. Cricket in the US just launched the ZTE Score, an Android smartphone for $130 US. My guess is that Public will launch the same phone, or something similar.

    • You know, your comment had a lot to do with the news on Public Mobile. You don’t need to insult a new company just because you enjoy paying for overpriced plans and phones. PM will probably get Android in the near future FYI. Also phones are used to call and text. Just because you get more features you might be getting on your High-tech phones doesnt make it a better phone, just different. Finally, PM’s phones aren’t trying to coppy other models. Who says the BUZZ came after the Blackberry?

    • i’m guessing your comment is targeted to me, Nicole? Here’s my response:

“your comment had a lot to do with the news on Public Mobile.”
Well, if you can even consider this to be news. All these feature phones should be able to use the Opera Mini and eBuddy Java apps for web browsing and instant messaging, really. The E520 probably has a non-eBuddy app installed, but has anyone tried it? Syrup should.

“[y]ou don’t need to insult a new company just because you enjoy paying for overpriced plans and phones.”
Umm, i’ve spent $100 on an Optimus One, plus less than $25 to upgrade it to an Optimus Chic by trading in the One plus a Samsung Link. As for my plan, it is incompatible with phone subsidies, but it gives me unlimited calling, lots of features, and lots of Internet access. It’s a better value than many and most other plans.

“PM will probably get Android in the near future FYI.”
Getting tired of hearing “probably”. Like Wind, Android should have been at Public since day 1. Mobilicity had the Nexus One starting in October 2010, and they sold out the phone very quickly. That’s a good lesson for Public Mobile to learn.

“Also phones are used to call and text. Just because you get more features you might be getting on your High-tech phones doesnt make it a better phone, just different.”
Android smartphones are commonly available for under $100, not just from Robelus, but also Mobilicity’s Motorola Spice. And yes, i know someone who owns the Spice. Those little Androids are better than simple feature phones, yet they’re not super-powerful. In any case, they are more valuable than limited and cheap feature phones.

“Finally, PM’s phones aren’t trying to coppy [sic] other models. Who says the BUZZ came after the Blackberry?”
Well, my post pointed out that Public brings nothing new to the table. Vidéotron has an exclusive Garmin Android/GPS, and two of my friends each own one. Bell loves “superphones”, Rogers loves PlayStation phones, Telus has the HTC Status… but Public Mobile has nothing unique. The Buzz mimics a BlackBerry, plain and simple.

i’d like to keep this a friendly debate and so keep in mind that i respect you. It’s just that i disagree with your point of view. Public Mobile’s device lineup looks a lot like Solo Mobile’s. The latter is a brand that Bell Mobility is slowly discontinuing. i’d love to see Public bring something unique and exclusive to the plate.

  11. This actually isn’t such a bad dumb phone, I have to admit. I can see it selling well, especially for that price.

  12. For all you folks love to gripe about Public Mobile, I am a customer of theirs and I love it. And their roaming service was recently HUGELY expanded. I had roaming service on the French River, where even Bell and Rogers fear to tread! (And since the roaming is likely on Bell, it must mean my little Tomo has remarkable reception, because I was at least 20 km past the roaming boundary.)

You b***h about Public and their phones and their coverage all you want.

And let’s compare bills at the end of the month.

    Y’all can go p— up a rope.

    • You sound a bit too mad, bro.

I do agree, however. While I don’t see myself ever signing up with PM, it quite clearly has its demographic, and this is whom these phones are targeted for, which makes perfect sense.

It’s interesting how most people who complain about PM phones can’t even afford one. Their daddies sponsor their Androids, etc.

Anyway, it’s good that PM exists. It adds some much needed competition to the market and offers good service to those who see value in it.

  14. Really funny how those sad lifestyle smartphone girlies bash PM. Go play angry birds and update your FB status. We want to talk and text unlimited for 1/4 of your plan’s pricing, no contract. Coverage? I live in the big city and stay there – I don’t need coverage in the uptight suburbs. Plus we’re old enough to not beg daddy for a new phone or use our student loans to buy phones that you need to charge 2 times a day. Losers.

  15. Another way to see this is that for the price a smartphone nugget spends on acquiring his phone on a 2 year contract and one month on his plan, I pay for my plan for an entire year with PM. Yeah, that hurts, I know. Plus I don’t need to give a bj to the rep in order to get my little rebate coupon!!! An added bonus is that I don’t end up with carrier IQ stuff on my phone. Guess, I’m not playing angry birds for a long long time. Finally, PM have Android devices now… with unlimited data plans for 35$. Oh, that hurts too.

  17. I am currently a NEW & PROUD client of PM.

I got myself a 25$ per month contract and the ZTE E520.

No doubt everything about this phone is great, execpt for the lack of space on the small keyboard and no wi-fi…

The threated conversation SMS, is really great.
