FYI… MTS is also “4G” now

MTS is getting ready to launch their new HSPA+ “4G” network on March 31st. That’s right. MTS now follows TELUS and Bell and hopped on the 4G bus. The change is most likely caused by new competition in the region… but MTS now also abides by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standards that gives them authority to market their network a certain way.

It’ll be interesting if Rogers shifts to “4G”. The main reason is because everyone else is, but specifically in Manitoba where Rogers/MTS  shared the network build out cost together. A few weeks ago Rogers stated they’ll be increasing their 3G+/HSPA+ network coverage in Manitoba on March 31st… so essentially it’ll be 4G thanks to MTS.

  1. In the MTS mind, EDGE = 3G. I have their Moto A854, and the MTS build of the Android 2.1 system puts a “3G” icon on my notification bar when in EDGE coverage.

    So, 3G + 1 = 4G I guess.

  2. Wow! Someone was a little too sleepy to be writing articles today. Seems like proof reading has been left to the readers to complete.

    • Unfortunately with the mess the ITU made, 4G means hspa+ or wimax.

  4. Darryl, your Milestone from MTS is a CDMA phone. How could it possibly be connected to an EDGE network?

    • Mts/Rogers seems to be using the original Mts Tower placements for their “4G” network. So it’d be safe to say that 4G is thanks to Rogers (for the technology) and thanks to MTS for their towers.

  7. Uh… I believe EVDO is considered a “third generation” technology.

  9. I recently got MTS’s 4G data plan, Novatel MC996D HSPA+ USB modem, and MoFi mobile router. I live in south central Winnipeg, the USB modem indicates connected to HSPA when idle and GPRS/EDGE when in use. The fastest speed I get is 2.5 mbps WiFi or LAN connection. Same speed when the modem is connected directly to my laptop. Mind you my iPad with Rogers was less than 1 mbps.
