At the end of October, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum was quoted as saying voice calling for WhatsApp was on the way in early 2015. Now, just as 2014 draws to a close, we’re seeing some indication that work on this feature is almost complete.
AndroidWorld.nl reports that the version of WhatsApp available for download on the company’s website contains evidence that the voice calling functionality for WhatsApp will have their own screens for dialing as well as call logs. AndroidWorld mocked up the screenshots you see above based on the information they found in the version of WhatsApp for Android distributed yesterday.
What’s more, SlashGear points out that the app has started asking users to switch on Bluetooth, another sign that the developer is preparing to introduce voice calling. This means WhatsApp has successfully resolved technical problems preventing the originally planned Q2 2014 launch.
Though a lack of voice calling puts WhatsApp behind Hangouts, Skype, Viber, and others in terms of functionality, its absence hasn’t exactly hurt WhatsApp. The company has more than 600 million users and is the most popular messaging app in the world. It was purchased by Facebook back in February of this year for $19 billion.
