The iPhone Duo 2 should skip out on the under-display camera

The FaceTime Camera isn't the best

The iPhone Duo 2 should skip out on the under-display camera

I’ve been using the iPhone Duo for about a week, and I’ve been pretty impressed by the foldable.

The iPhone Duo, like many folding phones, has multiple cameras: two rear-facing, one on the front and one on the larger, internal display.

I love taking selfies, but with a folding phone, I typically don’t need to use the internal selfie cameras because of the multiple screens. With folding phones, I can open up the handset and use the cover screen as a viewfinder and take selfies with the rear-facing cameras. The iPhone Duo has two capable rear-facing cameras that are able to take stellar selfies, so I end up forgetting about the camera on the inside display. Unfortunately, on the iPhone Duo, it isn’t that great.

Apple doesn’t list the camera specs anywhere for this lens in particular, which I found a little suspicious. And Apple specifically calls it an under-display FaceTime camera, which is very nondescript. And well, the camera was pretty disappointing.

Check out the differences between taking a selfie with the under-display camera, the cover display shooter and the primary sensor.

Samsung used under-display camera technology for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 through Galaxy Z Fold 6. They all had a 4MP sensor and were the reason why I got used to never using the selfie camera on the inside screen. I like the idea of an under-display camera (UDC), so you don’t have something obstructing your view when you’re watching content.

But on those three devices and the iPhone Duo, you can pretty much always see the UDC, so it’s not even worth it. The Z Fold 7, 8 and 8 Ultra got rid of the under-display camera and now use a regular hole-punch camera with a 10MP sensor, which I think is a better alternative. I’m also a fan of just getting rid of the camera on that display; use the main shooters or the one on the cover display if you want to use the camera hands-free.

Either way, I hope Apple does something different with the iPhone Duo 2; however, as someone who doesn’t use this camera ever, it hasn’t impacted my iPhone Duo experience at all.
