Tesla pauses Model 3 Premium orders after hitting import cap

Changes to Tesla's Canada website suggests it could go back to selling U.S.-built Model 3s.

Tesla could be switching back to U.S.-built Model 3 vehicles for the Canadian market after it hit a cap on Chinese imports.

For context, Tesla previously switched to shipping Shanghai-built Model 3 vehicles to Canada to avoid Canada’s counter-tariff response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

However, a notice on Tesla’s website says the company stopped taking Model 3 Premium orders because “high demand exhausted Tesla’s import quota.”

“Model 3 Premium orders paused after high demand exhausted Tesla’s import quota. Ordering resumes if Govt of Canada issues more quota, expected March 2027.”

Currently, the Canadian configurator for the Model 3 greys out the Premium model so it can’t be selected.

There’s some confusion around how the EV import caps work. The government has said the import cap works on a first-come, first-served basis, but Global Affairs Canada can also set aside “a portion of the available quota for the use of OEMs, including new entrants.”

Further, there was some speculation on social media and from DriveTeslaCanada that the company could switch back to offering the U.S.-built Model 3 Premium in Canada due to changes made to the Tesla Canada website.

According to screenshots from RJTesla, the EPA-estimated range was bumped to 584km, and the 0-100 km/h acceleration improved to 5.2 seconds. These numbers match the range of the U.S.-built Model 3 Premium.

However, when I checked the Model 3 Premium RWD’s specs page, the range changed back to 463 km, and the 0-100 km/h acceleration back to 6.2 seconds. It’s not entirely clear what’s going on with the changes. It seems like maybe Tesla pushed the update before it was ready, but it could also be a simple mistake.
