If it weren’t for Apple, there may have never been a music video for Drake’s Hotline Bling

Whether growing up in Toronto’s Forest Hill neighbourhood actually means someone “Started From the Bottom” is up for debate, but what is clear is that rapper Drake has made some powerful friends since playing a wheelchair-bound teen on Canadian TV.

According to a new report from Recode, the house that Steve Jobs built not only paid to make the popular Hotline Bling initially exclusive to its Apple Music platform, the company also completely financed the creation of the song’s accompanying music video.

A wise move when one considers that since being subsequently uploaded to YouTube the official Hotline Bling video has been played more than 480-million and proven to be a veritable meme goldmine.

Apple’s decision to fund the creation of the video is part of a larger push by the company to bring consumers to its Apple Music platform, according to Recode writer Peter Kafka. The company is currently rumoured to be producing its own biographical series on rapper, producer and current employee Dr Dre, and has other projects underway.

Drake’s upcoming album, Views From the 6, is slated to be released on April 16th and will be distributed by Apple Music.
