Inbox by Gmail is getting smarter by surfacing better search results

Email is a tough business to be in. Nobody actually wants to get most emails they actually receive, and so as an email service, your end goal is minimizing the time customers spend in your app. Since launching to the general public last year, Gmail has managed to reinvent itself with Inbox by Gmail. The new service now gets the majority of updates to the Gmail platform, leaving the Gmail app in its wake.

Today, Google began rolling out a new set of improvements to the Inbox app on mobile devices and on the web. Now, when searching for specific bits of information within Inbox, cards with data like tracking details or travel itinerary items will appear right at the top of results during relevant searches. Along with this new feature, Inbox will also show a ‘top results’ section during a search with the most relevant search matches, before showing a date-ordered list of search results as before.

It’s clear that the Gmail team wants Inbox to be the premiere email app in Google’s services suite, and recent improvements like Smart Reply and Trip Bundles show that the company is taking the app seriously. Frequent searchers, and users who maintain complete Gmail archives will no doubt appreciate being able to search through years of email more efficiently now.
