Back in August, an FCC document spilled the beans on a Microsoft-branded USB Miracast dongle that would allow mobile users to ‘cast’ their smartphone’s display to their TV. Microsoft’s IFA press conference came and went with no mention of the dongle and we all but forgot about the device.
Microsoft didn’t, though. This morning, the company announced the dongle in a post on the official Windows blog. Dubbed the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, the device plugs into your TV via HDMI and USB and allows you to mirror your phone’s display on your television using Micracast’s technology.
Given it’s based on Miracast, the device will work with any Miracast-enabled device (check out the full list of Miracast-certified devices the WiFi Alliance’s website) and is priced at US$60. It’s up for pre-order now and will arrive in late October.
We’ve reached out to Microsoft for clarification on Canadian pricing and availability, since we can’t find the Canadian pre-order page on Microsoft Canada (the US page is here and lists a release date of October 31).
