A few months have passed since our last update and the time seemed right to go over the “State of Android of Canada” once again. Google’s Android Developer site states that during a two week period prior to January 4, 2011 over 50% of Android phones that accessed the Android Market were running Android 2.2 Froyo. If Éclair is included to the equation 87% run either 2.1 or 2.2. Android 2.3 is officially Google’s latest iteration of Android has yet to hit any of the big name handsets other than the Nexus S, so it has a mere 0.4% of all market accesses during the 14-period. It’ll be interesting to see how Canada fairs to world averages.
Over the period of time since the last update the Galaxy S family line of phones on the Rogers, Bell and TELUS have all been updated to OS 2.2. In addition, the LG Optimus One which runs 2.2 has been launched by TELUS and soon to be released by Koodo Mobile. This along with other new devices and firmware upgrades have lead to a sharp increase in the percentage of devices running 2.1/2.2.
Here are some interesting Canadian stats we’ve discovered:
– There are currently 57 (5 for which have reached “End-of-Life”) Android handset models across 13 carriers
– Rogers still has the most amount handset models with 14 (3 EOL), followed by TELUS with 10 (1 EOL) and Bell with 6 (1 EOL) *tbayTel has a good amount as well but are all Rogers devices
– 21% of Android handset models are running Android 1.5 or 1.6 (12 models, 2 EOL)
– 49% of Android handset models are running Android 2.1 (28 models, 3 EOL)
– 79% of Android handset models are running Android 2.1 or higher
– 17 Android handset models are running 2.2 (up from 7 last update)
– 6 out of 14 Rogers Android handset models are running Android 1.5/1.6 (2 EOL – 3 Will remain 1.5/1.6)
– Only 1 Rogers Android handset model (Dell Streak) not running 2.2 has a commitment to an upgrade
– TELUS has 9 out of 10 handset models running 2.1/2.2 (only the Motorola Backflip is stuck at 1.5)
– Canada has zero Android devices running 2.3 (soon to change with the introduction of the Nexus S)
– All of the models offered by WIND, Mobilicity, Fido, MTS, Koodo, Sasktel, Primus and Virgin are running 2.1 or higher
– Only 9 Android models have commitments from their carrier and/or manufacturer for an upgrade
