LG G4 rumoured to be launching in Q2, could have 3K display

With Mobile World Congress just a month away, we’re looking forward to seeing how many of the major smartphone OEMs debut their 2015 flagships at the show. As we’ve mentioned in the past, we don’t think LG will have the G4 on site in Barcelona. The company just unveiled the G Flex 2 (and that device is scheduled to launch in February) so we reckon the company isn’t quite ready for a flagship unveiling.

This week, fresh rumours indicated that, indeed, the G4 launch may be scheduled for a little later in the year. UberGizmo reports that LG is gearing up for a major product announcement in Q2. This follows an earlier report that quoted an LG exec as saying the company didn’t have plans to unveil the G4 at MWC because the G3 was only announced at the end of May of 2014. The company apparently wants to spend the time “perfecting” the phone ahead of its launch.

The latest rumours regarding the LG G4 is that it might pack a display with a 1620×2880 resolution. For reference, the 5.5-inch display in the G3 has a resolution of 2560×1440. The source of these rumours is a user agent profile sent to MyLgPhones for a device named LG-VS999. Pocket-Lint points out that the G3 carries the model number VS9985 on Verizon. The Verizon G2 was VS980.

A 3K display sounds insane, but LG was one of the first OEMs to use a 2K display in its flagship device. While the likes of the G Flex 2 might do just fine with regular old 1080p, the company is probably looking for a way to set the G4 apart from the crowd. A 3K display would do it.

Of course, there are other ways to do that, too. In November, LG started mass production on a new type of display with ultra-thin bezels (pictured above). This screen measures 5.2 inches and the bezels are just 0.7mm thick, almost half a millimetre thinner than the bezels on the G3. The display itself is thinner than a credit card.
