Samsung all but promises wireless charging support for the Galaxy S6

Samsung has been quietly supporting wireless charging for a long time, but in a recent post on its official English-language blog, the company has all but confirmed it will be an integral part of the Galaxy S6 spec sheet.

The company has long offered wireless charging through optional back covers and accompanying charging plates for its Galaxy S and Note line, though few customers have taken advantage of it due to the extra costs associated with it.

Samsung notes that the company has managed to dramatically slim down the components that go into its wireless charging solutions, nearly halving the thickness between the Galaxy S4 and the S5. It also points out that it is a member of all three wireless charging consortiums, Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which operates the Qi standard, Power Matters Alliance (PMA) and the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP).

The company says that because chips are now available that support multiple standards on a single chip, Samsung is ready to bring wireless charging to the mainstream this year with its new device lineup. Echoing the thoughts in our recent piece on wireless charging, Samsung notes, “It is expected that 2015 will be a landmark year for the growth of wireless charging deployment. This comes as the ecosystem for wireless charging continues to rapidly grow and mature. In addition to IT companies, leading brands from a wide range of industries, such as consumer electronics, semiconductors, mobile services, automotive, furniture, software and others have joined the effort and are working closely together.

With our upcoming Galaxy smartphones, users will be able to enter a new wireless world like never before.”

Both the WPC and PMA are set to unveil new standards and upgraded versions of existing charging solutions at Mobile World Congress this year, so it’s likely Samsung is going to take advantage of those higher-speed charging methods.

Samsung is clearly bullish on wireless charging, as all the factors necessary to take it mainstream are within reach. The standard just needs a hero product like the Galaxy S6 to make it happen.
