An upcoming Canadian documentary will chronicle the history of BioWare, the legendary Edmonton-based game developer that was shut down on Oct. 21.
As reported by Deadline, Massive Effect: The BioWare Story will chronicle the history of the iconic Canadian studio, which was founded in 1995 by University of Alberta medical doctors Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip. According to Deadline, this doc began shooting two years ago, so it will cover “the final chapter” of BioWare, although it’s unclear how deep into the weeds of all of that it will actually get. For context, a relatively small team of about 50 people were still left at BioWare working on a fifth Mass Effect game, which has since been cancelled.
Commissioned by Edmonton-based Super Channel, Massive Effect: The BioWare Story is written and directed by Edmonton native Akash Sherman (Singhs in the Ring) and co-produced by Edmonton-based Fennessey Films and Score G Productions.
Per Deadline, the film will feature founders Muzyka, Zeschuk and Yip, Casey Hudson (creative director on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy), The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley, Canadian gaming host Victor Lucas (The Electric Playground), former EA CEO John Riccitiello, Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly, Canadian-American actress Jennifer Hale (star of KOTOR and the Mass Effect trilogy) and BioWare developers like Drew Karpyshyn (KOTOR and Mass Effect writer), Mark Darrah (veteran Dragon Age producer) and James Ohlen (lead designer on Baldur’s Gate and KOTOR), among others.
A release date hasn’t been confirmed, but Deadline reports that the film will premiere sometime next year following a “major film festival run” and a world premiere next year. Naturally, a lot of people will be anticipating this, given the global mourning from fans and developers alike.
Parent company EA, which is now co-owned by the Saudi regime, reportedly shut down BioWare to prioritize a new Star Wars: Battlefront game after taking on billions in debt due to the acquisition being a leveraged buyout.
