Digital Wellbeing beta brings parental controls, Family Link integration to Android Q

The update lets you set usage limits, view app time and set bedtime restrictions

Google’s Digital Wellbeing is getting a small beta update that brings some improvements and new parental control settings.

At the I/O conference in May, the search giant said it was adding the new parental controls, as well as deeper integration with Family Link, to Digital Wellbeing with Android Q. However, the new features have yet to appear in the Android Q betas. Now, an update rolling out to Digital Wellbeing introduces the new features.

To see these new features, you’ll need the Digital Wellbeing version ‘1.0.257813777.beta’ and likely Android Q Beta 5 as well. It’s worth noting that some users report that installing the update on Android Pie produces the features as well. You’ll likely need Family Link enabled as well, although, in my testing, it made no difference to whether Digital Wellbeing showed the new features.

I couldn’t get Digital Wellbeing to display the latest options on my Pixel 2 XL running Q Beta 5.

For those who do get the new Digital Wellbeing tools working, when you launch the app, you’ll need to choose between seeing your tools or going to the parental controls. Additionally, the update changes the name of the app to ‘Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.’

If you click through to the parental controls, Digital Wellbeing will give you a tutorial on the features and then take you to Family Link to set up your family if you haven’t done so already.

Once set up, you should be able to set daily usage limits for your kids, view how much time they spend in apps and add a bedtime restriction. Further, kids can request bonus time in apps, which parents can approve or deny.

If you want to try your luck with the new Digital Wellbeing features, head over to the Play Store to get the update.
