Over the weekend, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took to the company’s community forums to share a lengthy post on how the company is approaching the upcoming One Plus 6 smartphone’s design. The short version is that the company’s next smartphone will feature a glass back.

In addition, the OnePlus 6 will retain the OnePlus 5’s signature “horizon line and characteristic curve”.

“OnePlus 6’s glass design is centered around creating a “sense of value” and ‘premium hand-feel,’ wrote Lau. “We gave a lot of thought to how users should feel when they use the OnePlus 6. The advantages of glass over metal are manifold: glass communicates a transparent, bright, and pure feeling.”

“The way glass transforms under different lighting is a particularly important challenge—the OnePlus design team tested over 70 glass prototypes before selecting the best one.”

Moving to more practical details, Lau revealed the OnePlus 6 will feature a five-layered Nanotech coating. The inclusion of a glass back likely allow opens the OnePlus 6 to including inductive charging.

“We applied five layers of Nanotech Coating instead of three, even though the degree of separation between each layer is extremely subtle and tough to discern,” he wrote. “However, the additional layers give the back of the device a stronger impression of depth that our most demanding users will surely appreciate.”

Based on the previous photos OnePlus shared of the OP6, it appears the company will offer the phone in more vibrant colour options than in the past.

As Android Central notes, the OnePlus 6 won’t be the first time OnePlus has opted for a glass back; the company incorporated glass into the design of the OnePlus X.
