First BlackBerry Priv software update brings security enhancements and camera improvements

BlackBerry has released its first monthly security-related software update for the Android-powered Priv. Available today for Privs purchased from ShopBlackBerry, the update will roll out to carrier-sold devices starting on December 7th.

BlackBerry says the update comes in at 475 MB and brings both productivity and security improvements. Priv owners will see improvements to the camera app, both in speed and quality, capturing better low-light images, and also comes with some new filters.

The update gives the Priv the latest Android security patches, too, so users “rest easy knowing your device is protected against the latest Android security threats.” Performance and stability improvements are also part of the update, which should hopefully eliminate some of the slowdown users are seeing from the initial retail release.

BlackBerry will be updating its Android apps (Blackberry Keyboard, Blackberry Hub, Blackberry Camera, and DTEK by BlackBerry) on December 14th with several new features, including new emojis added to its predictive virtual keyboard. The BlackBerry Hub will be updated to support incoming WhatsApp notifications, and additional notifications within the DTEK app will alert you when other apps use your info.

In the meantime, you can check to see if the update is available by tapping Settings >> About >> System Updates >> Check for Updates.
