The city of Stratford might soon be known as Ontario’s self-driving vehicle capital, in a twist that would surprise even the Bard of Avon.
The home of the internationally recognized Shakespeare Festival now also plays host to the Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN), a self-driving vehicle research and development facility that will “allow researchers to hone the technology and test an [autonomous vehicle] in a wide range of everyday, real-life traffic scenarios.”
The government will be investing approximately $80 million CAD over five years in support of AVIN.
“The newly created Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network brings these attributes together so Ontario can continue to lead as we create the transporation solutions of tomorrow,” said Reza Mordi, Ontario’s minister of research, innovation and science, in a November 8th, 2017 media release.
AVIN is also comprised of a research and development partnership fund aimed at encouraging “small and medium-sized” Ontario companies to work on autonomous vehicle technology.
An online ‘Central Hub’ is also expected to galvanize support for research as well as the transmission of any developments that take place in Stratford.
In addition to self-driving vehicle research, AVIN will further expand on connected car research and development.
