Long anticipated Canadian survival game The Long Dark gets an official release date

The Long Dark

After of years of careful iteration through Steam Greenlight and the Xbox One’s early access program, The Long Dark finally has an official release date: August 1st, 2017. That’s when the game’s long anticipated story mode will finally come out.

The title is both made in Canada and about Canada. Set after a devastating electromagnetic storm, The Long Dark tasks players with surviving the harsh conditions of the Northern Canadian wilderness while trying to find out what happened.

If you have fond memories of the original Mass Effect trilogy, there’s another reason to be excited about The Long Dark. The game sees the reunion of Canadian voice actors Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale, best known for their complementary takes on Commander Sheppard. This time around, Meer plays bush pilot Will Mackenzie, while Hale lends her voice to Dr. Astrid Greenwood. The two characters are the protagonists of the survival tale.

According to Hinterland, the first two chapters of The Long Dark should take players between six and ten hours to complete. Subsequent chapters will arrive throughout the rest of the year and into the start of 2018.

Players who bought The Long Dark while it was in early access on PC and Xbox One at its original price of $20 will get access to all of the game’s single player content at no additional cost. New players, meanwhile, can pick up the game for $35. On August 1st, the Long Dark will also make its debut on PlayStation 4.
