Avoid DIY disaster with Instructables [App of the Week]

The last time I tried out a recipe I found online, my chocolate cake came out looking like a burnt potato while the instructions I was following depicted a cake that looked perky and delicious.

Unfortunately, this has been the case for almost any DIY project I pull off the internet. My final product never looks quite as beautiful as advertised. Perhaps the solution to this is to pull instructions from a platform where real live amateurs post the guides.

Instructables is a DIY community app released by Autodesk in 2015 that allows users to both follow creators that they find interesting and post their own guides to amass followers themselves.

With several different categories, including technology, crafts, home, food and costumes, this app could literally turn anyone with a bit of time and patience into a DIY maven. The options range from Flamethrowers to cupcakes to magnetic leather wallets, though the app also has an option to participate in contests held by creators themselves.

Furthermore, however, each category contains sub categories if you’re looking for something really specific. For example, the technology section contains headers like 3D printing, Apple, Assistive Tech, Audio, Computers and Digital Graphics.

With Halloween coming up soon, the ‘Costumes’ category might be particularly useful for those looking to save some money on a Halloween costume this year.

Instructables is available for download on iOS and Android
