In its first-ever Google Play Awards at I/O 2016, Google handed the honour of best app to home-design tool Houzz and titled mobile strategy blockbuster Clash Royale, the year’s best Android game.

In a statement to developers, Google said it was impressed by how the Play Store has progressed over the years.

Google gave out the awards at a dedicated ceremony during the Google I/O developer conference, kicking off awards that are expected to be a yearly part of the event. In its release, Google noted that the winners were selected by the Google Play team based on criteria emphasizing app quality, innovation, and having a launch or major update in the last 12 months.

Other categories included best use of material design, which was taken home by the team that created stock-trading app Robinhood, best families app, which went to logic puzzler Thinkrolls 2 and Most Innovative, which was awarded to VR app NYT VR.
