Merriam-Webster just added 1,400 words to the dictionary, with many of the new additions coming from the world of tech.
One timely addition is “dox,” the act of publishing information on some, particularly as a form of revenge. The dictionary, however, doesn’t do much to settle the debate on the proper spelling of dox when used as a verb; it says both “doxing” and “doxxing” are correct.
Notably, several abbreviations also made the list, including FOMO (fear of missing out), TMI (too much information) and ICYMI (in case you missed it). The last one is particularly helpful for any publication that relies on Twitter to get its articles out.
Last June, the Oxford English Dictionary added more than 400 words to its lexicon of the English language, including several tech-focused terms like sexting, crowdfunding and photobomb.
