Twitter increasing Direct Message limit to 10,000 characters

Twitter

Twitter announced today that it is increasing the limit of Direct Messages to 10,000 characters, up from the 140 character limit it currently shares with public Tweets.

The company has been talking about engaging more people in private messaging as it struggles to keep pace with the user acquisition of services like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Kik, Line and WeChat.

The higher character limit will take effect sometime in July, after CEO Dick Costolo steps down, and will be supported both in first and third-party Twitter apps.
