WestJet promised in-flight Wi-Fi this year and they’ve taken the first step to make this a reality. The airline has announced a multi-year deal with Panasonic Avionics to bring “a new inflight entertainment system with the ability to feature wireless satellite internet connectivity, live streaming television, on-demand movies, magazines and more.”
Certainly progress, but WestJet stated the installation of this system will happen on all 737 aircraft “over the next several years.” In the meantime, Panasonic will start with one of the planes “before the end of 2014,” then do fine tuning to ensure the quality is sufficient for its guest experience. The content will be a mix of free and paid, and WestJet will offer various airtime packages to connect to the web.
The seats will also have USB/110 volt power outlets so that passengers can charge their devices, plus WestJet will continue offer the option to rent out tablets during flights, something the company has been doing since 2012.
