There have been numerous leaks of Sony’s upcoming quad-core, 1080p “Yuga”, but this is the first time we’ve seen it clearly and running shipping software.
German Android site Android Schweiz posted up-close photos of Sony’s 5-inch device, which promises to catapult the company back into the realm of competitiveness. The device appears to be running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, but is likely to launch with Android 4.2. The phone continues the trend of using on-screen navigation buttons from the Xperia T, but appears more boxy and less distinctive than the upcoming 4.6-inch “Bond Phone“. Sony, like Samsung before it, could be dressing up the Yuga in clothes unbecoming of a shipped device, but we’d venture to say this is a latter-stage prototype.
Its internals read like the recently-announced HTC Butterfly J: a 5-inch 1920×1080 display, 2GB RAM, a quad-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, a 12MP camera and a non-removable battery. In terms of design flare, the Yuga is expected to be Sony’s first phone with a glass back, and that chrome power button the right side looks fantastic.
Considering the Xperia T has yet to launch in most markets, we wouldn’t expect the Yuga, model number C660X, to launch until at least early January. The company announced the Xperia ion at the Las Vegas conference earlier this year, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they do the same with this one. Let’s just hope, for Sony’s sake, it doesn’t delay the launch for six months afterwards.
What do you think of the Yuga? Will this be your next phone?
