Google: Ice Cream Sandwich now on 4.9% of Android devices, Gingerbread at 64.4%

Google Developers have released the monthly chart gives an insight into the various versions of the Android OS. The past 4 weeks have been a good for those with OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – this saw a jump from 2.9% of total devices running the OS to, as of May 1st, capturing 4.9%. Of course there’s no breakdown per device, so it could be complimented by the Galaxy Nexus, HTC One X (Rogers) or even a few of the new tablets. Android 1.5 (Cupcake) and 1.6 (Donut) are almost complete history as they are stuck powering only 1% of all Android devices – this is the same as last month. Eclair dropped 0.5% and Android 2.2 Froyo still has a big chunk with 20.9% (down from 23.1% from April). Android OS 2.3 is this the king and increased once again, now powering 64.4% of Android devices.

Over the next couple months, specifically this month, various carriers promised to upgrade several devices to Ice Cream Sandwich. So hopefully those June stats would see ICS increase to double digits.
