Twitter for Android and iOS now support animated GIFs

Twitter announced today that its mobile clients on Android and iOS, as well as its web interface, now support animated GIFs. Long a mainstay of services like Tumblr, animated GIFs have seen a resurgence in recent years, but until now Twitter forced users off the website to another service like Twitpic.

iPhone and Android users will see a small “play” button on the GIF, so it won’t play automatically, but legacy users on apps like Tweetdeck, Twitter for OS X and others will link to the web before being able to play.

It’s a small improvement to a service that many use daily, but one that will be greatly appreciated when words just aren’t enough. It also highlights Twitter’s new emphasis on photos — moving or otherwise — over text.
