Samsung is reportedly adopting a perhaps unexpected naming scheme for some of its upcoming foldables.
According to leaker Ice Universe, Samsung will use the “Galaxy Z Fold 8” and “Z Fold 8 Ultra” branding for the successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the rumoured Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, respectively. The wider phone is expected to compete with Apple’s long-rumoured iPhone Ultra foldable.
Reserving the Ultra branding for the more premium Fold 8 is certainly an interesting choice, as that name tends to carry with it higher-end features like advanced zoom cameras and S Pen support. However, these features aren’t expected to be offered with the Z Fold 8 Ultra, which could dilute what the “Ultra” term actually means.
In any event, we should learn more fairly soon, as Samsung is rumoured to hold its next Unpacked hardware event on July 22.
