Popular distraction-free Light phone is now getting a flip model

Miss the early 2000s? Minimalist phone maker Light is working on a new phone that calls right back to the flip phone era.

Named the Light Flip, it’s marketed as a ‘distraction-free’ device that touts none of the “endless scroll” apps that are taking up our attention nowadays.

Looking at the design, it looks exactly like what you would think a Light Flip phone would look like — a simplistic design, white text on a black background, a list of tools, etc. As Engadget pointed out, there is no external screen when the flip is closed, unlike most modern flip phones. There is only a notification light.

The phone also sports a 50-megapixel camera that outputs 12-megapixel images alongside a removable battery pack hidden behind a screwed-down plate.

Unfortunately for Canadians, it’s not clear whether the Light Flip will come here. Light previously got Canadian carrier support with Telus for its Phone 2 and 3 models, and Light’s compatibility checker confirms the Flip will also work with Telus and Koodo (but no other providers).

Regardless, you still need to foot the bill for the phone outright. The Light Flip is available for preorder through Light’s website, and it costs US$299 (about C$421.21).

One small problem, though: this phone won’t ship for a while. Engadget notes that the phone is not expected to ship until April of 2027, so it could be a long wait for this oldschool phone.
