Google has been trying to make its YouTube Kids app safer and easier to use since it launched in 2015.
The company is working on rolling out three significant updates that will go live in 2018. The updates are designed to help families tailor what they want to be hidden from their kids and what content they want to be accessible.
The first update is rolling out this week and it’s called ‘collections by trusted partners.’ These are groups of channels that are geared towards kids and their interests. According to YouTube, these collections can include channels about arts and crafts, sports, music, and learning. All of these channels will be a verified with Google, ensuring parents know that their kids are watching safe content.
YouTube Kids is also creating a section of the app focused on content that has been approved by parents. This is a way for parents to handpick videos and channels that they want visible to their children. This feature is slated to become available later this year.
YouTube is also now offering a feature that locks the YouTube kids app to only display channels that have been verified by the YouTube Kids team.
This means that all of the content in the app is confirmed to be safe and verified by actual humans, according to Google.
